SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,013, dated May 31, 1887.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALKYARJ), of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to the devices known as button-fasteners, which are designed to fasten and maintain the button securely in operative position.

The objects of my invention are to simplify and cheapen and to render more durable and efficient this class of devices.

To the above purposes my invention consists in the certain new and useful construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as hereinafter fully described and claimed. v

The views are all enlarged in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top view of a blank of my fastener as cut from sheet metal before being struck up. Referring to the drawings, 7 designates the base-plate, which is a flat disk. Near the center of the base-plate 7 is punched or cut out the four-sided diamond-shaped frame 8, having the arms or clips .11, and which is integral with said base-plate at thepoint 9; From the side of the frame 8, opposite the point 9, extends the flat tongue 10, which is integral with the frame. Both the frame and the tongue are cut out from the base-plate together when said plate is cut from the sheet Fig. 3 represents a side view.

The tongue 10 is left in normal position, and lies in the plane of the base-plate flush with the surfaces of the same, and has a certain degree of resiliency given to it when displaced by virtue of the connected point 9.

The button 13, Fig. 4, has its shank placed in the securing clips 11 by first raising the outer free end of tongue 10 clear above the metal. The holding arms or clips 11 of the g frame 8 are struck up into the securing-clips,

In the modification the securing-clip or holding-arm is struck up in an almost vertical position, Fig. 6, and a button may be secured to it by snapping it into the securingclip 11 as above described in Fig. 4.

In using my fastener to mount a button on fabrics, leather, or the like, in the usual manner, the shank of the button is forced through a perforation in the material and drawn to the opposite face, where the tongue of the fastener is passed through said shank, which is snapped into the securing clip or clips, as before described. The material in this case lies between the button-head and the upper surface-of the base-plate, which bears snugly against the under face of the material and maintains the button securely in operative po sition.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
