SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,112, dated March 27, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HAZEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasttenings, of which the following is a specifica- ,1on.

My invention relates to certain improvements in staple-fastenings for attaching buttons to shoes and other apparel without an under plate, and particularly to the fastening for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 272,836, bearing date of February 20, 1883, were granted me, on which patent my present device is an improvement; and it consists, first, in beveling the ends of the con caved prongs on their edges; second, in flattening and broadening the prongs and then pressing them into a conoavo-convex form, and, third, in forming the body of the loop round, flattening and broadening the prongs on their outer surface, and convex on their under surface, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.-

In the accompanying drawings, which are enlarged, Figure 1 represents my invention with a loop and two depending concaved prongs which are beveled on their edges near their ends toa point; Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 7,

My improved device in its preferred form is made from sheet metal bent in the form of a staple with its ends beveled to a point on their edges at c c, and its prongs AA pressed concavo-convex from the curve of the loop B to their extreme ends, so that-when the fastening is forced through the fabric and strikes the novel die shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings its prongs are deflected in opposite directions up against the under side of said fabric, when that portion a a of prongs at the immediate end of the curve of the loop B flattens and broadens, as'does also that portion a a below the beveled ends where they turn up into the fabric, while the intermediate portions of prongs A Athat is, between the broadened and flattened parts referred to-retain their concaved form, which condition gives great strength and general effieieney to the fasten jing, while the material between the prongs below the loop B and eye of button holds the fastening firmly in the position in which it is I set.

In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 7 of the drawings I show modified forms of Fig. 1, either of which may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention. In Fig. 2 I make the beveled edges flat on their ends and the same thickness as the prongs. In Fig. 3 I make the bevel longer. In Fig. 4 I flatten the end and bevel it as in Fig. 2, and in Fig. 7 I make the fastening of round wire and flatten the prongs, bevel their ends, and then press the said prongs into a eoncavo-convex form, or, if preferred, they may be simply flattened and broadened on their upper and convexed on their under :surface. desirable result will be producedthat is, increased strength and endurance to the prongs anda broad and rounded portion of prong next to the person of the wearer-the said broadened and rounded condition enabling them to better maintain their position when subjected to the strain from button when in use.

In my patent already named, on which my present device is an improvement, I notched the ends of my prongs, so that the said prongs might terminate in additional small penetrating-prongs; but I have found that in certain cases it is more desirable that the said main prongs should terminate in central points,and have consequently beveled them in my present device, as shown and described, to accomplish this result, and consider that I have therein made a valuable improvement over my device as heretofore patented to me.
