SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,686, dated April 27, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JAMES F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Taek-l3utton Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to a new and improved formation of buttonfastener designed for use in the place of a headed tack or one prong fastener; and it consists, essen tially, of a fastener made from wire, having a prong formed by doubling a length of wire and swaging or sharpening the connected portion to form a penetrating end, the free ends of the wire being bent outward at right angles to the prong, formi ng arms, which constitute the base or head portion of the fastener, all substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described. t

In carrying out my invention the fastener is made by doubling a strip of wire at the center of its length, forming the single prong 1, the inner or connected portion constituting the point 3, which is swaged sharp to readily penetrate the material to which it may be secured. The free ends of the wire are then bent outward in opposite directions at right angles to the prong 1, forming the arms 2 2, which constitute the base or head portion of the fastener, as fully shown in the drawings.
In securing a button to a shoe or other artiele the prong of the fastener is passel through the material. thence through the button-eye, and is then bent around the wire of the button eye to form a loop, securely attaching the button to the material.
If the point 3 of the fastener be swaged so that the fiat surface is on a line with the arms 2 2, as shownin Fig. 1, the prong will bebent over at right angles to said arms when at tached to a button in fabric, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; but if the point 3 be swaged with the flat surface at right angles to said arms, as in Fig. 4, then the prong will be bent on a line with said arms. as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, the arms in each case serving as a base portion to preventthe fastener from being drawn upward through the fabric.
The advantages of my improved fastener will be readily apparent without a more minute description, asit combines chcapness and durability, and a ready adaptation to the purpose contemplated.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A button fastener formed from wire doubled at the center of its length, the connected portion of said wire being swaged to form a penetrating end. the free ends of the wire being bent outward at rightangles to the doubled portion, forming arms which consti-' tute the base or head portion of the fastener, substantially as herein set forth.
2 The button-fastener herein described, formed from wire, comprising the prong 1, having swaged end 3, and the arms 2 2, bent at right angles to the prong and adapted for use substantially as specified.
