SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,242, dated August 9, 1892. Application filed November 29, 1890. Serial No. 372,998.. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WESLEY BANK- SON, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices-to wit, a Double-Pointed Pin- HoOk-of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,whereby an y one skilled in the art can make and use the same.

My invention relates to the general class of devices that are adapted for use On textile or like fabrics for the purpose of securing edges or folds of such fabric in any desired position; and the object of my invention is to provide a fastening of this general class that can be readily secured to and detached from a garment or other article or piece of textile fabric or the like that may be penetrated by the pointed hooks.

To this end my invention consists in the improved fastening having a body part provided at or near its Opposite extremities with inturned hooks, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure lis a top view of a fastening embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fastening, showing its method of use.

In the accompanying drawings the letter ct denotes the fastening device as a whole, consisting of the body part b and the hooks c c.

The fastening is preferably made of wire bent to shape, having a central coil b and the integral points that turn backward and inward in Opposite directions, as clearly illustrated in the drawings.

This fastening is preferably made of springwire, and this coil, that may consist of one or more turns, serves as a spring that tends to keep the hooked ends of the fastening in engagement under any strain that otherwise would bend the fastening back, so as to disengage one or both of the points.

The coil b', formed in the body of the fastening, serves as a means of grasping it when in use, and it also provides an opening through which a cord or other means of securing it may be passed.

This improved fastening device may be used for a great variety of purposes, as for fastening shawls or other wearing-apparel to the person, for fastening tidies, curtains, or other articles of furnishing, and it also serves an extremely useful purpose in the dressing of show-Windows and display of goods iu stores without regard to the weightor quality of the article in connection with which it is used. It forms, in fact, a cheap and simple substitute for the common pin and also for the safety-pin, having this advantage over both that it forms a stronger means and a more ornamental one in the place of the Ordinary pin and is much simpler in construction and is much more readily used than is the safety-pin, owing to the fact that it does not have a loose or swinging member that requires to be held in the socket to keep the pin in position. It may be made to serve a useful and also an ornamental purpose and is particularly useful as a means for fastening a ribbon, badge, Or other article in any desired place on the dress.

I do not limit myself to any particular material or special form of construction of the fastening device so long as it embodies the main features of the body part andthe pointed hooks that are turned toward each other from opposite ends Of the body part of the fastening.

If desired, an ornamental shield or covering may be secured to the front part of the device by means of loops formed on the shield, through Which the body part h of the fastening device may extend.

I claim as my invention- The improved fastening device consisting of a single piece of metal having` at each end inturned engaging points and provided at its center with a coilin a plane lengthwiseof the body part of the device, whereby the points are forced toward each other by any strain brought to bear thereon, all substantially as described.
