N0.'s57,192. ,Patented 11610.8,1881

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OBRA I. FOSTER, OE HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 357,192, dated February 8, 1887.
Applicationfiled May 6, 1886.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OBRA I. FOSTER, of Haverhill, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hat-Hooks, of which the following description, infconnection with. the accompanying drawing,is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts. 3'
This invention has for its object to construct a hat-hook which may be readily applied to an ordinary wardrobe-hook or other garmentsupport.
In accordance with this invention, a strip of material, preferably wire, is bent at one end to form a support for a`hat, and at its opposite end to embrace an ordinaryhook or projecting support, the said strip being also preferably bent adjacent to the supportinghook in o rder that the upright or shank of the hat-hook may 'lie a suficient distaneefrom the supportinghook to which it is attached to permit a coat or other garment to be hung upon thesaid supporting-hook.
The drawing shows in side elevation a detachable hat-hook embodying this invention.
The supporting-hook, having the two supporting ends fr b,is of usual construction.
The hat-hook consists of a strip of metal preferably wire, bent at one end into a circular form, as at c, and turned at right angles with relation to'tlie shanleor upright d, to form a fiat support upon which a hat may be placed.` The opposite end ofthe strip of wire is bent over upon itself for a short distance to form a loop or clamp, having the sideportions, c e2, the extreme end e of the portion e being turned over to form an engaging end. The two portions e c2 are bent or curved inwardly toward each other at a point intermediate of their length, thus forming substantially two loops or eyes to clasp or embrace the hooked ends a b of the supportinghook. The shank d,upturned from the portion e,is slightly bent outward at its lower end, or V-shaped, so as to leave a suneient space at the end of the sup' porting-hook to receive a coat or other gar'- ment and not interfere with the shank, and
the top portion of the shank d is bent at d in Serial No. 201,316.' (No model.)
ordinary construction, greatly adding to the efiieieney of the latter with buttrifling cost.
It is obvious that, instead of attaching the device to a supporting-hook upon which other garments may be hung, it maybe attached to any other projecting support, and it may also be variously bent to answer the requirements for which it is needed.
I claimr l. A detachable hathook, it consisting of a strip of metal provided with a loop or clamp at one end to embrace the fixed hook or support, and a vertically-extended shank portion upon which the hat is placed, substantially as described.
2. The hat-hook herein described, it consisting of a strip of metal provided with a loop or clamp at one end yand adapted to receive 4a hat upon its other end, combined with a hook or support embraced by the said loop or clamp of the hat-hook, substantially as described.
3. VThe hat-hook herein described, it consisting of a strip ofinetal bent to form a loop ,or clamp, and turned upward to form a shank to support the hat, combined with a hook or support to which the said hat-hook is removably attaehed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to .this specification in the presence-of two subscribing witnesses.
