BUTTON-FASTENER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,965, dated May 18I 1886.
Application tiled March 10, i886. Serial No. 194,678.
To all whom, it may concern/f Be it known that I, JAMES F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State i of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Buttons and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertai ns to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speeication.
This invention relates to a new construction of a combined button and fastener; and it eon sists, essentiall y, of afastening device comprising an intermediate neck portion rigidly secured to a head made from leather or other suitable substanceand a conneeti ng-base provided with prongs bent at right angles thereto, all formed from a continuous strip of wire, one of the prongs being made from the doubled inner portion of the wire, the doubled part of said prong being swaged to form apenetrating end, j the remaining prongs being formed from the L outer or free ends of said Wire, all substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a perspective view of my inn` proved button and fastener; Fig. 2, a perspec tive view of a modified form ofthe same.
In carryingl out my invention the fastening device A is made from a continuons strip oi" wire doubled at the center of its length, the inner or doubled portion of the wire forming the prong 3, swaged at the end to form a penetrat-ing point, 5. The doubled wire is then bent at or near the center ot' its length into the form of a staple, forming the intermediate neck portion,4, which is composed of fon r sections of wire lying close together. The projecting ends are then bent outward at right angles to the neck portion 4:, to form a connectingbase, 6, and again bent downward at right angles to the connecting-base 6, forming the prongs 2 2 and`3, the prongs 2 2 lying (No model.)
l side by side, the` prong 3 being connected at l the end, as previously describedn The intert mediate -neck portion,4, is rigidly secured to the head l, said head being made t'romleather, j pulp. or other suitable substance, pressed or molded into the 'required form, thus forming the complete device, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
In place or" forming the connecting-base 6 on each side of the neck portion 4, as previously described, I may form the fastener A with the doubled prong Sprojecting straight downward from the neck portion, omitting the connecting-base from that prong, as shown in Fig. 2, the prongs 2 2 in this instance standing a distance apart, instead of side by side. as in Fig. l. My improved button and fastener is secured to a shoe or other article by passing the prongs through the material and clinching them on the under surface, the connecting-base resting on the upper surface and serving to retain the button in proper position on the material when in use.
I claiml. A combined button and fastener comprising a head portion made of leather, pulp, or othersuitable substance, and a fastener rig idly secured to said head portion, consisting of an intermediate neck and a connected base 3 provided with fastening-prongs, one of said l prongs being made from doubled wire and the i remaining p rongs being formed from single ,t wire, substantially as herein set forth.
i, 2. A button and fastener comprising the head l, having intermediate neck portion, 4, and the conneetingbase 6, provided with the single prongs 2 2 and double prong 3, subi sta-ntially as and for the purpose specified.
l ln testimony whereof I affix my signature l in the presence of two witnesses.
, JAMES F. THAYER.
