' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BITTER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
PURSE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,894, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed March 7, 1896. Renewed January 16, 1897- Serial No. 619,499. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB BITTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city,
county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved purse of that class in which the body of the purse, the side, and end gussets are made from one integral piece of leather or other material and creased into proper shape, so that the purse can be manufactured at a considerably lower price than when the parts are stitched together, as heretofore; and the invention consists of a purse the body of which is made with end gussets, intermediate end gussets, top gussets, and top corner gussets in one integral piece, said body being applied to the pivoted jawsof a frame provided with a suitable fastening device; and the invention consists, further, of the special construction of the blankfrom which the purse-body is made, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved purse shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the purse is made.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the body of my improved purse, which is made from the blank shown in Fig. 3. This blank is preferably cut in the required size from one continuous piece of leather or other suitable material by a suitable die, after which it is creased and folded in such a manner as to form ordinary end gussets a a, sides a at, intermediate folding end gussets a small top gussets a and top corner gussets a as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The end and intermediate gussets aa are arranged at the main sides of the blank, while the top gussets a and top corner gussets a are arranged at the ends of the blank.
The blank is creased along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 3 and then folded up and attached to a frame formed of two pivoted jaws b b and suitable fastening devices I). When the purse is open, it forms one largepocket, with or without an interior coin-pocket C, from which the coins can be readily taken out on opening the jaws b b.
When the interior coin-pocket O is provided, I
it is of course understood that it must be made of a separate piece of material and is not made of a portion of the blank which forms the main body of the purse.
By making the entire body of the purse, including the end gusset, intermediatefolding gussets, the narrow top gussets, and the top corner gussets,of one integral piece of leather, which is cut in suitable shape by a die and then creased, the purse can be manufactured at a less cost than'when the end and top gussets are sewed together by hand, while a much more durable and better-looking purse is obtained,as there is no ripping of the end gussets.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A purse, consisting of a body composed of sides, end gussets, intermediate folding end gussets, top gussets and top corner gussets, all made in one integral piece, and a frame provided with a suitable-fastening device, substantially as set forth.
, 2. The blank herein shown and described for the body of a purse, consisting of sides, end gussets, intermediate end gussets, top gussets and top corner gussets all made in one integral piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB BITTER.
Witnesses PAUL GoEPEL, GEO. W. JAEKEL.
