` il a. i i 1"' NECKTIE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. CHARON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in neckties and it is primarily the object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the scarf end of the tie is always assured of a proper effect.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the scarf or broad portion of the tie is so formed as to give the appearance of two end portions.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character including means whereby the narrow end of the tie can be readily and conveniently concealed in order that the effect of the tie will not be marred.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel device of this character which is formed from a continuous piece of material.
Further, it is an object of 'the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simplein construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In describing the invention in det-ail reference will be had Vto the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a view of the tie arranged as when worn showing the finished effect; Fig. 2, is a view in front elevation of the tie eX- tended; Fig. 3, is a view in rear elevation of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, is a view in plan of the blank, the folds given the blank being indicated by dotted lines.
In the drawings l, denotes the broad end Specification of Letters Patent.

or scarf portion of the tie, 2 the narrow end portion and 3, the intermediate or neck portion. These are formed from a single piece of material and in the manner indicated by Fig. Li.
In forming the tie the scarf portion of the tie is of sufiicient width and has its edges a and Z) arranged on converging lines, the edge ZJ forming one of the edges of the inter* mediate portion 3, and narrow portion 2. The lower edge of the scarf is serrated or arranged on an irregular line as indicated at c. Each of the edges a and b are notched at opposed points, as at al, said notches being positioned between the center and the upper edge of the scarf portion. In forming the tie the scarf portion is bent or folded inwardly on the line indicated by e. The scarf portion is then plaited on the line f and g. rIhis plait brings the edge formed by the fold e at a point indicated by the line 71,. The edge portion b is then folded inwardly on the line la and overlaps the plait to which it is secured by suitable stitching as indicated at j in Fig. 3. The folding of the edge portion Z) extends through the intermediate portion 3 and the narrow portion 2. The article shown in Figs. 2 and 3 results. This folding also brings the notches 0l in register and they are then stitched as indicated at 7c to form the opening m. By this arrangement it is thought to be obvious that a tie is provided having its scarf portion formed of four plies, the inner ply being provided with an opening which, in practice is intended to have passed therethrough the narrow portion of the tie. It is also to be stated that the edge portion of the ply formed by the plait is secured to the opposed ply thereof by an invisible running stitch indicated by o in Figs. 2 and 3. It is thought to be apparent that the irregular edge c produces the finished effect of the tie as indicated by 4 in Figs. l and 2.
In use the tie is formed into a four-inhand in the usual manner and the narrow portion Q thereof is passed in between the plies of the scarf of the tie through the opening m. By this means a proper effect of the tie is always assured. It might also be well to state at this point that the narrow portion of the tie is provided within its folds with suitable reinforcing material to permit the insertion of the narrow portion through the opening m.
I olaiinz- As a new article of manufacture, a necktie formed of a single piece of material, the scarf portion of the material having a lateral extension, said extension being folded upon itself on longitudinal lines, the longitudinal edges of the scarf portion being provided with :dining notches to forni an opening when the scarf portion is folded.
In testimony whereof, I afiX my signature in the presence of'two witnesses.
