Description
l. L. SABLE. OMBINED HOOD AND SCARF.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 6. I921.
Patented D050 0,, 1921.
INVENTUR A5 44 fid/e ISAAC 113. SAELE, OF NEW YORK, I l. ll.
COMBINED Ill-TOUT) AND SCAJRF.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 68, mar...
application filed May 6, 1921. fierial No. act m.
To all whom it may concern:
llc it known that llSAAO L. Salami, citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hoods and ticarfs, of which the following is a. specilication.
This invention relates to combined hoods and scarfs. One object thereof is the provision of an article of wearing apparel of the character described which may be economically manufactured which is simple in construction, and which is effective for keeping the head, neck and chest of the wearer ade quately protected from the cold.
it further object of this invention is the provision of a combined hood and scarf which may be made from simple patterns and in which. the head member is so shaped as to leave the vision of the wearer unobstructed.
A still further object is to provide an article of wearing apparel of the character described which may afford several styles of wear, the hood being adapted to be neatly folded back so as to give only a neat scarf or shawl efiect.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the invention in use as it appears from the front in one style of wear;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding perspective view showing the appearance of this style of wear viewed from the rear;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing an embodiment of the invention in use in another style of wear with the hood folded down;
Fig. fl: is a front view of a combined hood and scarf embodying the invention as it appears when opened out flat; and i Fig. 5 is a partial sectional view thereof.
In the illustrated embodiment of this invention, the parts are made preferably of knitted wool fabric or of other similar material suitable for protecting the body of the wearer from the cold, and are all formed from substantiall rectangular blanks for economy of materlal and simplicity of structure. The scarf member 10 is preferably made considerably longer than its width, and may be gathered at its ends 11 and 12 for the attachment of the tassels 13 and 14 thereto. The hood member 15 is preferably made of a front panel 16 and a rear panel 17 seamed together along the side and top edges thereof as by means of the seam 18 whereby said hood member may be folded into a flat member of little thickness when not in use. Tn making the seam along the top edges the panels are rounded off as at 19 to give the hood effect. The blanks from which said front and rear panels are made are preferably substantially rectangular in outline and are arranged to coincide in the folded position of the hood member. The upper end of said hood member, after the panels have been seamed together is preferably gathered as at 20 for. the easy attachment thereto of a suitable tassel 20..
For the purpose of fitting the hood to the head in such a manner that the vision is unobstructed, while at the same time the ears remain well covered, and the two thicknesses of material provided at a point where the maximum stretching is likely to occur, the lower edges of the front panel is upturned to form the reinforcing vizor 22. At the upper peripheral edge of said vizorthe seam 23 is made for securing said vizor to the front panel 16. The hood member 15 is secured to the scarf member 10 by means of a horizontal line of stitches on seam 24f which connects the lower edge of the rear panel 17 to the upper edge of said scarf member, whereby the parts are permanently joined and are enabled to act as a unit to protect the head, neck and chest of the wearer.
When worn as a scarf or shawl only, the hood member is readily folded back along the seam 2d. The hood then rests neatly against the rear of the scarf and forms to gether therewith a very ornamental and dressy shawl or scarf. llf desired the hood may be folded back underneath the coat or sweater of the wearer, whereby. said hood is entirely hidden from view and the outward appearance presented by the scarf-hood is the same as though a scarf only were being used. When so worn, by reason of the lllltl the back of the wearer as in the style of wear illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, or the scarf may be worn like a shawl with these ends restin in front as shown in F i 3.
t will thus be seen that t ere is provided an article of apparel in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of ractical use.
s various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by "Letters Patent 1. In a combined hood and scarf, a scarf member formed from a substantially rectangular blank, a hood member extending from said scarf member substantially at the middle portion and adapted to be suspended therefrom at the back of the neck, said hood member comprising a front panel, a rear panel and a seam at the side and top edges of said panels for securing said panels together, a seam about which said hood member is adapted to fold connecting said hood and scarf members together, an upturned reinforcing vizor on said front panel integral with sald front panel, and a seam at the upper edge of said vizor for securing said upper edge to said front panel.
2. In a combined hood and scarf, a substantially rectangular scarf member, a hood member secured to said scarf member substantially at the middle portion thereof and adapted to be suspended therefrom at the back of the neck, said hood member comprising a shaped front panel, a shaped rear panel, seams joining said panels at the side and top edges thereof, a seam joining the lowermost edge of said rear panel to the upper edge of said scarf member about which said hood member is adapted to fold, a reinforcing vizor integral with said front panel turned upwardly from the bottom edge of said front panel for forming two thicknesses of material on said bottom edge,
a seam securing the upper edge of said vizor to said front panel, and gathered portions at the ends of said scarf member and at the top of said hood member.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 19th day of April, 1921.
ISAAC L. SABLE.
