HARRY A. CLARK, 0F DES MOINES, IOYVA.
NECK'IIE.
Application filed August 31, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY A. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Necktie, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a neck tie of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
More particularly it is my object to provide a neck tie, so constructed and arranged that it may be readily and easily attached to an ordinary collar button, and having adjustable parts so mounted that the neck tie can be secured at different relative heights with relation to the collar button.
My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, combination and arrangement of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are at tained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a neck tie, embodying my invention, installed on a collar button. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the upright reinforcing member and the adjustable fastening device.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally an ordinary linen collar of the.
turn down type, which is secured in front to a shirt 11 by means of the ordinary collar button 12, having a head 18.
My improved neck tie comprises a cloth portion 14, which may be of any ordinary shape but as shown has the form of the ordinary four-in-hand. The upper portion of the neck tie is provided with a horizontal member 15, the ends of which extend beyond the main portion of the neck tie 14. The member 15 is provided with suitable stiffening device 16, which may be of leather or any suitable material. The main body of the neck tie 14, just below the portion 16, is provided within the folds of its cloth with the substantially upright reinforcing member 17, clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The reinforcing member 17 is sewed into the cloth. Said reinforcing member is provided with a plurality of openings 18, which are preferably screw-threaded. The cloth of the neck tie 14 is provided with openings which Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 859,543.
may, if desired, receive eyelets 19, which register with the openings 18 in the reinforcing devices 17.
For securing the neck tie 14 to the collar button 12, a fastening device is provided comprising a shank 20, having a screwthreaded end 21, adapted to be selectively secured to any of the openings 18. The opposite end of the shank 20 is provided with a resilient catch device 22, adapted to receive and hold the head 13 of the collar buttOn 12.
In this connection it will be understood that the catch device 22 may be of any suitable form to accomplish the purpose and that any suitable means may be employed for selectively mounting the shank 20 at various heights on the reinforcing means 17.
In the practical use of my improved neck tie the shank 20 is mounted in one of the openings 18. The neck tie is then easily placed in position and the fastening device 22 is snapped over the head 13. The position of the shank 20 with relation to the reinforcing means 17 and therefore with relation to the neck tie 14 may be determined by the height of the collar with which the neck tie is being worn. For a low collar, the shank 20 may be screwed into one of the upper holes 18 while for a high collar the shank may be selectively mounted in one of the lower holes.
It will thus be seen that the neck tie may be readily and easily adjusted for use with collars of different heights. No unsightly parts are visible at any time when my improved neck tie is used. Considerably less material is required for making a neck tie than is ordinarily the case. The neck tie can be tied when originally manufactured and thus a true and artistic tie can always be secured, which might not be the case if the neck tie were tied each time when it was put on. The neck tie is saved from wrinkling and wear due to repeated tyings.
It will be understood that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of my neck tie without departing from its'essential features as set forth herein, and it is my intent to cover by this application any such changes which may be included within the scope of my claim:
I claim as my invention:
In a neck tie, a substantially upright neck tie portion, a transverse portion at the upper end thereof, projecting beyond the sides of screw-threaded openings, said upright portion having openings arranged to register With said screw-threaded openings on one side thereof and provided with eyelets, a fastening 'devlce comprising a screw-thread- "edshanl'cadapted to extend through said eyelets and received in said openings, said 10 Copies ofthis patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
