BUTTONHOLE RENFORCEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 4, 1910.
Patented Feb. 25,1913.
SeriaI No. 559,256.
T 0 all wiz-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA M. HCFADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus; in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole Reinforcement, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to button hole protectors and has for one of its objects to provide a device to be sewed between the plies of clot-h and adapted for any wearing apparel where but-ton holes are used.
This device is particularly adapted for collars or cuiiis or thin linen garments to protect the button holes thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, but it will be understood that changes in the specific structure may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit ot the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l, represents in side elevation the button hole portion of a collar. Fig. 2, is a section on the line :2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3, is an enlarged perspective of the protector.
Referring now to the drawings in which my invention is illustrated the protector comprises a T shaped member formed of metal or any suitable material that is not easily bent.
The device has the laterally extending arms 2,provided on the extremities with the enlarged rounded head 3 so as to prevent cutting edges. The arm 4 of the protector is formed on its outer end with a crescent shaped enlargement 5, arranged in the same plane as the arms 4, the open part of the crescent facing outwardly.
The device is adapted to be sewed between the plies of the material, as seen in Fig. l, the arms 2 lying vertically between the plies, the arm 4 extending toward the button hole and t-he crescent shaped member 5 straddling the end of the button hole. The stitching of the button hole is adapted to pass over the crescent shaped portion and the arm 4 and hold the same in position. If desired a second row of stitching may be passed on the other side (to the left in Fig. l) so as to further steady the device and prevent the same from slipping out of place. The crescent member 5 forms a reinforced and stiii'ening member for the end of the but-ton hole and also should the material at the end of the button hole wear out, the button will then bear against the metal portion of the protector and later prevent the wearing of the button hole.
What is claimed is:
l. A button hole protector formed of a single piece of metal, said protector being in the shape of a T and having the cross arms provided on their ends with enlargements, the leg of said T having a crescent shaped enlargement adapted to lie with its co-ncavity toward the end of the button hole.
2. A button hole protector comprising a piece of metal formed in T shape and having cross arms provided on their extremities with enlargements, the leg of the T having a crescent shaped enlargement on its tree end, the concave portion of the crescent being directed outwardly and adapted to be seated in and partially embrace the end wall of the button hole.
In testimony whereof I aitix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ANNA M. MCFADDFTW.
Witnesses NORA M. Connrr, ROBERT P. DUNCAN.
