S E. V. WHITAKER.
G-LOVB.
N0. 284,150. Patented Aug. 28,1883.
WITNESSES:
N UNITED STAT s PATE T OFFICE.
EDWIN v. WHITAKER, on GLOVERSVIIILE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,150, dated August 28, 1883,
Application. filed March 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may coneern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAKER, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to ,which it appertains to make and use the same,
' I I reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a glove provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an insidelview of I the top of the glove with its elastic web or wristband cut open, and Figs. 3 and 4. are plan views of two slightly-different ways of shaping the elastic web or wristband.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 2o sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to gloves, and it contemplates certain improvements upon the glove for which Letters'Iatent were granted to me on the 23d day of August, 1881, N0. 246, 259;
2 5 and it consists to that endinfastening a knittedwristband having a'flap upon its upper edge, and the whole knitted in one piece and with a selvage, upon a glove having a slit or gore uponthe usual place in button-gloves, as herein- 0 after more fully shown and described, and particularly pointed out'in the claims.
I In the construction of the glove described in my former patent there has been the draw back that the wrist portion of the same was 3 5 rather bulky, and that the glove had to be cut out'or scalloped ina mannerdifferent to the usual shape of button-gloves,-so that the knitted wristband could only be used in gloves out especially to fit it; and to make it possible to 4o provide a usually-shaped glove with an elastic wristband, whichwill obviate the necessity of buttons and take the place of a pulse-warmer at the same time, I construct the wristband as follows: I
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a glove having a slit or gore, B,in the inner portion of the wrist of the glove, out from the edge.
O is a piece of .knit webbing, knit with par- 1 5o allel and straight upper and lower edges, and
- having a flap, D, projecting from its upper edge, knit in one piece with the wristband O,
all the edges of which are knit with a selvage.
The wristbandis knit in afiat piece, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the ends of the same are knit obliquely, as shown at E, converging to opening atthelower edge, widening toward the upper edge when the ends are united in any manner of uniting knit fabrics. This wristband is stitched upon the inside of the glove by a row of stitches following the edge of the glove and the gore, the latter being covered by the flap D, so as to form awristlet, and at the same time, by its elasticity, hold the glove upon the hand without causing too great a strain or pressure around the wrist, the gore I B and the elastic flap D admitting of the wrist of the glove being dilated for the insertion of the hand, and the elastic flap and the elasticity wrist.
Having thus described'my invention, I claim and desire to secure by United States 1. The wristband having parallel upper and lower edges, and the edges at its ends converging toward the lower edge, as described, and having a flap projecting from the upper edge, near the one end, the whole knit with a selvage, and adapted to be stitched to the wrist new article of manufacture.
2. The combination, with the wristband having parallel upper and lower edges, the edges of its endsconverging toward the lower edge, and a fiap projecting from the upper edge, of a glove having the usual slit or gore at the wrist portion, the said wristband adapted to be attached to the wrist portion of the said glove, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aitixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. v. WHITAKER.
