Description

. R E K A T l- H W V GLOVE.
Patented Aug-23,1881.

EDWIN V. WHITAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,259, dated August 23, 1881. Application filed April 11, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAKER, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the followingisat'ull,'clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a glote embodying my improvement. Fig.2is an inside view of the top of the glove with its elastic web or wristband cut open; and Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are views (each representing part of a glove) illustrating certain modifications in the application of my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My improvement relates to gloves or mittens which are provided with elastic wristbands attached permanently to the top of the glove or mitten, and has for its object to dispense with the use of separate elastic gores in the top of the glove.
To this end it consists in scalloping the top of the glove and making the flaps or scallops overlap the upper part of the elastic web forming the wristband, the flaps being stitched to the underlying wristband along their edge, so that the intermediate uncovered sections or portions of the elastic wristband-web operate in the nature of elastic gores, to permit the requisite expansion and contraction of the top of the glove, and cause a tight fit without too great a strain or draw around the wrist.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents a glove, (or portion of a glove,) the top of which is cut out or scalloped, as shown at a (0. These scallops may be cut in various shapes, as convenience and fancy may direct' either rounded, as in Fig. 1, pointed, as in Fig. 3, or with straight sides and tops, as in Fig. 5. In Fig. 4 I have represented rounded scallops or flaps of considerable width, and in Fig. 6 a series of square or rectangular flaps formed by slitting the material into parallel slits b of equal depth.
B is a piece of knit webbing or other elastic fabric, which is cut with parallel and straight upper and lower edges, as shown at 0 (Z in Fig.
2, and stitched to the inside of the glove by a row of stitches, 0, following substantially the contour or outline of the flaps or scallops a a. In other words, that portion of the elastic fabric B which lies between contiguous flaps a a is'in the nature of and operates as elastic gores inserted between said flaps.
I am well aware that it is not new to provide a glove or mitten with a wristlet or wristband made ofelastic material; but in order to avoid pnckering of the leather of the top of the glove it is necessary to insert one or more 6 elastic gores at the point where the wristlet joins the top of the glove. By extending the elastic web B back of the flaps or scallops a a in the manner described, I obviate the necessity for separate gores, besides re-enforcin g the top edge by having a double thickness of material, a and B, at the point where the greatest wearand strain come in putting the glove on or off.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A glove or mitten the top of which is cut out to form flaps or scallops a a, and provided with a wristlet or wristband, B, of elastic mm 86 terial, having parallel upper and lower edges,
0 d, stitched to the inside of the top by its upper edge, 0, and along the edges of the overlapping flaps or scallops (a a, thus forming a series of gores between said flaps, which said gores are in one piece with and form part of the wristlet B, as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature 90 in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN V. \VHIIAKER.
