To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON SoHiFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in button holes, the object being to decrease the liability of the button holes to tear or rip and at the same time to provide a button hole which will yield to the insertion of the button therein by expansion and which will contract and hug the shank or other means attaching the button, and which will assume and maintain its normal closed shape when not engaged by the button for a longer period than the ordinary button hole when not provided with my device.
With the foregoing objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a view showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 3, is a section through the button hole provided with my invention; Fig. 4, is a view of a modified form; Fig. 5, is a plan view of the button hole provided with the elastic showing how it will hug the shank or other attaching means of a button.
A, represents the fabric material of a gar ment in which the button hole is Worked or constructed; B, designates the invention consisting of an elastic cord 1, and the covering of the band 2; 3, designates the stitching; C, designates the modified form of the elastic 1, provided with the covering 2, in which the elastic is adapted to be formed in shape as the making or construction of the button hole proceeds; 4, indicates the shank of a button or other ordinary means by which a button is secured to a garment.
My device is constructed and operated as follows: An incision (not shown) is first made into the fabric A as is done in the construction of an ordinary button hole, and which is made in the well known manner, in this art, by a suitable tool so well known as to delimit myself to the mand no further explanation here; the band B, comprising the elastic 1, and the covering 2, is then inserted in the insertion made into the fabric A, and is secured therein by the stitching 3.
In the use of the modified form C, as shown in Fig. 4, a desired length of the elastic is cut to fit the button hole and the ends secured together by any suitable means, such as the ordinary means of sewing, the elastic is then secured in the button hole or incision by the stitching 3 as has already been described.
In Fig. 5, I have shown how a button hole provided with my invention will hug the shank 4 of a button.
It will be readily seen that I have invented an article cheap to manufacture, effective of purpose and rendering the button hole supplied therewith more durable and with-a tendency to maintain its normal closed shape for a longer period than an ordinary button hole not provided with my device, or where the buttonhole is constructed with a nonelastic cord whereby the expansion is limited to the precise size of the opening cut in the fabric of which the button-hole is constructed, while by the use of an elastic cord the fabric is permitted to expand to its full capacity and is made to assume its normal shape as soon as released from over a button.
Slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claim, hence I do not desire to exact construction as herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
A fabric provided with a button-hole com prising an elastic cord, a cover provided over the cord, and means securing the cord in the button-hole, substantially as described.
