To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED M. RonDnL- nnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stockings, and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view of a stocking embodying the invention;

Fig. 3 is a rear view ofa pocket showing a modified construction;

Fig. 4 is a rear view of a pocket showing a further modified construction.

In carrying out my invention, I provide .a stocking 1, of any desired kind, and for purposes of illustration I have shown a ladies stocking. In the construction shown, the stocking ,has a part thereof at the top removed so as to form separated edges with,

a space 2 between them` the edges 3 being preferably inclined. This space may be formed either by cutting away a portion of the stocking, or by omitting a part thereof in the process of knitting or manufacturing the stocking. A receptacle or pocket 4 for carrying anydesired articles, is then placed in position back of this opening. In Figs. 1 and 2 this pocket, whichmay be of any suitable material, is fastenedto the stocking back of the edges 3, in vany desired manner, as by sewing it to the stocking. The pocket may be formed in any desired manner and has a mouth adapted to be closed as hereinafter described. The stocking is held in 'position by means of some fastening device `which draws the edges 3 toward each other and holds them in the desired position. As herein showna fastening device 5 which may be a ribbon, cord or othersuitable device, is threaded back and forth across the opening 2, passing through openings or eyelets 6 at the edges of the opening 2. It will be seen that when this fastening device 5 is drawn up it will draw the edges 3 ofthe opening 2 toward each other, and thus cause the stocking to tightly clasp the leg. The

ends of the fastening device may then be fastened to hold the edges in this position, as by means of a knot '7. The means by which the stocking is held in position also causes the pocket or receptacle to be held closed. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 this is done by passing'the holding device through openings 8 in the two folds of the pocket. In this construction the pocket is therefore tightly closed and secured, as it were, by the same means which is used to hold the stocking on the leg. In the con` struction shown in Fig. 3, instead of having the fastening device 5 pass through the material of the pocket, I provide the pocket with a fold or flap 9 arranged so that when the fastening device is tightened to fasten the stocking to the leg, this fold will 'be passed tightly against the leg, thus holding the pocket closed. stocking, and a chamois pocket 11 is placed back of the insert and is fastened thereto, preferably by the fastening device 5 passing through holes therein, the fastening device also closing the mouth of the pocket. It will thus be seen that by means of this device I provide a concealed pocket, and I further provide a fastening device which performs two functions, that is, the function of fastening the stockin to the leg, and the function of keeping t e pocket closed. It will further be seen that the pocket also performs two functions, namely, to hold articles of any desired description; and to act as a filling or insert or flexible closure for the space 2, so as to prevent an unfilled or open space from being provided at the point where the stocking is fastened, and in addition to preventing an unfilled or open space, it also prevents the fastening device from injuring the leg. It will further be vnoted that when the fastening device is in Yits fastening position it presses the overlapping

12 and 13 of the pocket near its mouth together so as to keep the mouth of the pocket closed, and this is accomplished in all of the modifications illustrated in the drawing.

In the specification and claims I have used the Word stocking, and I use this term broadly to cover all forms of hosiery.

I have described in detail particular constructions illustrating my invention, but it is of course evident that the parts may be ular construction shown.

I claim:

l. A stocking comprising a body portion having a part thereof near the top removed so as to form separated opposed edges running lengthwise of the stocking and normally separated by a space, a double walled pocket of a separate piece. of material from said stocking secured between, said edges, said pocket provided with a mouth by means of which access is secured thereto, and a fastening device connected with said opposed edges and adapted when manipulated, to draw said edges toward each other and simultaneously fasten the stocking in position and hold the mouth of the pocket closed.

2. A stocking comprising a body portion having a part of the material at the top thereof removed so as to provide two opposed edges runnin@ lengthwise of the stocking and separated y a space, a pocket extending across the space between said edges and forming a flexible closure therefor, said pocket provided with a mouth by means of which access is secured thereto, and a fastening device connected with said edges for drawing them together to fasten the stocking to the leg, said fastening device when Vin its fastening position, pressing the overlapping portions of the pocket nearest the mouth together so as to close the pocket.

3. A stocking comprising a body portion having a part thereof near the top removed solas to provide two opposed edges running lengthwise of the stocking and'separated by a spacea pocket located between said edges and having a mouth by means of which access is secured thereto, a fastening device connected with said opposed edges and adapted to draw and hold them together so as to fasten the stocking to the leg, said fastening device also extending through the material of the pocket near its mouth so as to also close the mouth of said pocket when the fastening device is in its closing position.

4. A stocking comprising a body portion nasales having a part thereof near the top removed so as to provide two opposed edges running lengthwise of the stocking and normally separated by a space, a pocket located between said edges and having a mouth by means of which access is secured thereto, said edges provided with a series of openings extending therealong, a flexible fastening device laced back and forth across the space between said edges, said flexible fastening device passing through the folds of the pocket near the mouth thereof, whereby when the fastening device is in its fastening position., it simultaneously fastens the stocking in position and holds the mouth of the pocket closed.

5. A stocking comprising a body portion having a V-shaped opening at the top extending len hWise of the stocking so as to provide two opposed inclined edges extending from the top of the stockingtoward the foot thereof and normally separated by a space, a pocket attached to the stocking along said inclined edges but back thereof so as to leave said edges free, the pocket extending across said V-shaped space and forming a flexible closure therefor, said pocket having a mouth by means of which access is secured thereto, the free inclined edges of each 1side of said space being provided with a plurality of openings substantially in alinement in a direction from the top of the stocking toward the foot thereof, a flexible fastening device extending through said openings and laced' vback and forth across said space and the portion of the pocket exposed therethrough, said fastening device adapted to be drawn taut to reduce the circumference of the top of the stocking so as to hold the stocking in position, the pressure produced thereby acting to hold the mouth of the pocket closed.
