INVENTOR /%AA/ A, /yaswmw ATTORNEY MOLLIE L. GROSSMAN, OF NEW"YORK,.N; Y;
TOILET ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 10, .1920;
Application filed August 29, 1918. Serial No. 251,983.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoLLIn L. GnossMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident/ of New York city, in the county of New York andState of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains more particularly to a novel handkerchief and to the combination therewith of a specially held and concealed powder-puff.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a combined handkerchief and powderpufi, with powder thereon, so constructed and arranged that the powder-puff is concealed within the handkerchief, but may nevertheless be used for the purpose of applying powder to ones face without the fact being observed by others. The handkerchief is of the usual fine fabric through the interstices of which the powder may pass on the application of the handkerchief to the face, and this handkerchief has a definitely located draw string defining an outline and adapted on being drawn together to form a pocket around a small powder puff placed within said outline, whereby the powder puff becomes concealed, but may nevertheless without loosening the draw-string or other fastening, be employed for applying powder to ones face, the powder passing through the interstices of the material of the handkerchief. By loosening the draw stringthe powder-puff may be removed and fresh powder applied thereon and then placed back into the handkerchief or, if it should be so desired, the handkerchief may after the removal of the powderpuff, be laundried.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top View of a handkerchief embodying my invention, the powder-puff being shown as placed within the outline defined by the draw-string and its pocket, this being the preliminary position given to the puff prior to the same being inclosed within the handkerchief;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale and partly broken away, through the same, taken on the dotted line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top view of the handkerchief after the ends of the draw-string havebeen: pulled to close the handkerchief aroundthe powder-puff, and
Fig. 1' is an enlarged sectional View through a portion of the same, taken on the dotted line 4:i' of Fig; 3.
In the drawings, 10 designates the handkerchief, and 11' the powder-puff, which is a well-known commercial article and usually formed of wool andhaving a piece of ribbon 12 at the upper side thereoffor convenience in dipping the pufi into or against toilet powder.
The handkerchief 10 is of the usual fine texture employed in the manufacture of ladies handkerchiefs, and upon the face of this handkerchief I sew, a tape" or'binding. 13, preferably arranged in circular outline and sewed at its opposite edges directly tothe handkerchief, whereby a pocket, open at both ends, is created to receive the draw string or plece ofribbon 14:. The tape or binding 13 lies flat upon the surface of' the handkerchief and therefore in' itself does centra ly within the outline of the tape or binding 13 and draw-string 14, as shown in Fig. 1, and then the two ends of the drawstring are pulled to close the material of the handkerchief about the tape or binding 13- over upon the puff 11, thereby inclosing the puff in a pocket made of the material of the handkerchief itself, this being one of the important features of my invention. After the ends of the draw-string 14: have been pulled to close the material of the handkerchief about the puff 11 the ends of said string may be tied together, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby securely confining the puff 11 in correct position. Any straining caused by pulling on the draw-string 14: is taken mainly by the tape or binding 13 and thus injury to the fine fabric of the handkerchief is avoided.
After the puff has been secured in place I within the pocket 15 formed by the handkerchief, the handkerchief may be used for its ordinary purposes as well as for applying powder to the face, the closed end of the said pocket being applied on the face and the material of the handkerchief being such that the powder may pass through the interstices thereof.
When it is desired to remove the powderpuff 11 from the handkerchief, the ends of the draw-string 14 may be untied and the outline defined by the tape or binding 13 opened outwardly from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby releasing the pufl and leaving the handkerchief smooth and fiat.
The invention imparts to the handkerchief the very great convenience of being able to inclose a powder-puff and permit the use of the same without attracting attention; and it is to be noted that the handkerchief keeps the powder-pun sanitary, as the puff never touches the face. It is well known that the perspiration and dust on a ersons face would soon soil a owderuff necessitating frequent changes, which, with the use of my invention, are avoided. I employ the expression powder-puff herein in a generic sense, meaning thereby any suitable holder for toilet-powder which may be inclosed in the handkerchief and permit the powder to pass through the interstices of the same to the face.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a handkerchief of textile material of fine mesh through which toilet powder may be caused to pass, the same having a binding strip sewed thereto circumscribing a definite outline and affording a pocket for a draw-string and having also a draw-string extended through said pocket, and the material of the handkerchief within said outline being adapted to receive a powder-puff, with powder thereon and with the powder-carrying face of the puff against the body of-the handkerchief, and to be folded about the same by the drawing of said string.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a handkerchief of textile material of fine mesh through which toilet powder may pass provided with a powder pufi, a pocket for the same and means for securing said pocket in closed condition to confine the pufi, said pocket concealing both faces of the puff, whereby the powder-carrying face of the puff may be concealed against and used through the material of the handkerchief.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 27th day of August, A. D. 1918.
