The invention relates to a toilet article especially intended for use by women when dressing or in the trying on of dresses in retail stores and the like, and aims to provide a protective covering to prevent the soiling of garments by contact with previously applied cosmetics such as face powder, rouge, lipstick, et cetera, as well as to protect the wearer against the rubbing or brushing action of the garment to the detriment or" her appearance.

'I" e device, the form illustrated is intended to cover or enclose the entire head of the wearer. As herein shown it is composed of two plain side pieces 5 secured together so as to leave a large opening for easy application and removal, and shaped to conform generally to the corn tour of the head. The top edge and the forward side edge are gently rounded so as to merge gradually one into the other, resulting in a closed, substantially semi-circular portion having a forepart with a rounded edge 6. The rear side edge 7 has a comparatively large radius of curvature but also merges gradually into the top edge, and the bottom edge 3 is substantially straight. The opening in the covering is provided in the preferred form along the bottom edge 3 and also along the rear side edge '2. This arrangement provides an upper forward portion which is closed and a lower rear portion which is open, thus permitting the covering to be opened substantially diagonally thereof so that the device may be applied or removed with a minimum of frictional contact with the face and hair.

The covering is secured about the neck of the wearer by ribbons or ties 9 attached to the lower rear corners of the side pieces 5. In securing the covering, the rear side edges 7 of the pieces 5 are folded over each other, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby completely closing the opening, and the ties 9 are brought around and tied in the front. The ties 9 are preferably in the form of extensions of a cloth binding strip 8 secured to the bottom edge 8 to reeniorce it and to protect the neck: of the wearer where the material composing the covering presents sharp edges.

An important feature of the covering device is that it should avoid interference with the wearers vision, so that at least the iorepart of the covering is made transparent. In the present instance, however, I have shown the device as being transparent on all sides. To this end, the device is made from two thin sheets of a cellulose composition material, such as that known as .Cellophane. In addition to being transparent, such material presents smooth out surfaces so that the passage of a garment over the head is facilitated. Furthermore, hair or powder and the like will not cling, or adhere readily to the smooth inner surfaces, and the material possesses an inherent stiiiness such that it does not hug the head and face.

In the form shown in Figure 1, the side pieces 5 are secured together at the upper and front edges by means of a suitable adhesive, thereby forming a glued seam 10 extending from the lower front corner to the upper rear edge. This prevents the edges from becoming torn or fray ed. The lower edges are, however, bound and reenforced by the binding strip 8 It will be apparent that a covering constructed in that manner will be of very low cost.

In order to increase further the strength and durability of the covering, the side pieces 5 may be reenforced at their upper and front edges by the use of a gumrned paper binding strip 11, as in the modified form shown in Fig. 3; or cloth binding strips 11' similar to the lower edge binding 8 may be applied to the peripheral edges 6 and '7 (Fig. 2), the rear edges or" the sheets 5, forming the rear opening, being bound separately.

In practice, the device is made large enough to enclose the head freely (Fig; l) and to compensate for various head sizes.

I claim as my invention:

1. A- protective head covering formed from two side pieces of a transparent cellulose composition material secured together with their bottom edge portions separated to form an opening, and a flexible binding strip secured to said bottom edges and extended to form fastening means for securing the covering about the neck of the wearer. l

2. A protective head covering comprising two side pieces of a transparent cellulose composition having upper edge portions glued together and lower edge portions free so "as to form an opening, reenforcing meanssecured to the bottom edge portions, and means secured to said reenforcing means for fastening the covering about the neck of the wearer.

3. A protective head covering comprising two side pieces of a transparent cellulose composition having upper forward edge portions secured togetherand lower rear edge portions free so as to form an opening, reenforcing means secured to the bottom edge portions, and means secured to said reenforcing means for fastening the covering about the neck of the wearer.

4. A protective head covering comprising side pieces of a transparent cellulose composition' pieces together over the upper side edges, and

a cloth strip extending around the bottom edge and providing means for fastening the covering about the neck of the wearer.

5. A protective head covering comprising two flat side pieces of transparent cellulose composition material, a flexible binding strip securing certain corresponding edge portions of the sheets together to form a cap of a size adapted to fit loosely over the head, with an opening permitting the covering to be slipped freely over the head, and means for securing the cap about the neck of the wearer.

6. A protective head covering comprising two side pieces of transparent cellulose composition material, and a flexible binding strip securing certain corresponding edge portions of the sheets together to form a cap of a. size adapted to flt loosely over the head, with an opening permitting the cap to be slipped freely over the head, the edge portions forming said opening also having binding strips with extensions thereof to form ties. v

7. A protective covering formed from two flat pieces of a transparent cellulose composition material secured together at 'their forward edges, flexible binding means at the bottom edge portions of said pieces to form a reenforced edge adapted to extend around the head in a substantially horizontal direction, and means including a flexible element connected with said binding means at the rear edges of said pieces for securing the covering in position.

8. A protective device for the purpose set forth, made from a thin transparent cellulose composition material and adapted to be applied to the head in protective relation to the face of the wearer, side portions extending rearwardly at opposite sides of the head, flexible binding strips reenforcing the edges of the transparent material, and means including a flexible element anchored to the reenforced edges of said rearwardly extending side portions for securing the device in position on the head.

9. A protective device of the character indicated, made from a thin transparent cellulose composition material and adapted to be applied to the head in protective relation to the face of the wearer with side portions extending rearwardly at opposite sides of the head, a flexible binding strip applied to one edge of the transparent material and adapted to extend around the head in a substantially horizontal direction, and flexible means connected with said binding strip at the rear ends of said side portions for fastening the device in position on the head.
