Abstract

A hairspray shield for use in applying hairspray to the hair of a person while preventing dispersion of the hairspray throughout a large area comprising a helmet-like shield of plastic or other suitable material adapted to be placed readily over the head of the person while leaving the face exposed and fitting closely enough around the face and neck of the person to prevent dispersion of the hairspray outside the region within the shield, said shield being provided with a plurality of self-sealing closures disposed at spaced points over the surface thereof and adapted to permit the insertion of the nozzle of a spray gun or can for applying hairspray to the hair of the person.

4 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures US. Patent Nov. 4, 1975 HAIRSPRAY SHIELD This invention relates tofa hairspray shield particularly adapted for use in beauty parlors in the :application of hairspray to the hair of the customer by an operator.

In beauty shops hairsprays are customarily applied to the hair of customers in the course of the hair treatment and styling procedure by spraying frompressurized cans, manually operated spray bottles or'special guns actuated by compressed air and supplied with the hairspray from a centrally located source. This operation results in dispersion of substantial quantities of hairspray throughout the area in which such operations are being carried out, which may be occupied by numerous customers and operators. Because of its composition, the hairspray thus dispersed may be exceedingly irritating to those persons in the area in which it is being used and may even be deleterious to their health.

Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide a means for permitting the application of hairspray to the hair of a person while confining the spray to a limited area in the vicinity of the head of the person while preventing dispersion of the hairspray throughout a much larger region.

In accordance with the invention there is provided a transparent shield of plastic or other suitable material adapted to be placed readily over the head of the person while leaving the face exposed and fitting closely enough around the face and neck of the person to prevent dispersion of the hairspray outside the region within the shield. The shield is provided with a plurality of self-sealing closures disposed at spaced points over the surface of the shield enclosure and adapted to permit the insertion of the nozzle of a spray can or gun therethrough to permit application of hairspray to all areas of the hair of the person with whom the shield is used. Also the shield is preferably provided with a hinged back portion which may be lifted to permit the shield to be readily placed over the head of the person with whom it is being used and then to be closed and fit closely around the neck of the user.

The invention will be more fully understood from consideration of the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the hairspray shield in place over the head of a person and being used to apply hairspray to the hair of the person by means of a spray gun inserted through a self-sealing closure in the shield.

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the shield itself showing it in further detail.

FIGS. 2a and 2b are detailed fragmentary drawings showing the construction of the self-sealing closures which are disposed at various points over the surface of the shield as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

FIG. 4 is a side view in section showing the hairspray shield in further detail and specifically showing the arrangement of the hinged back portion thereof.

Referring to the drawings, there is provided a helmetlike shield l of sufficient size and of a shape to be placed over and to accommodate the head of a person while leaving a sufficient space between it and the hair a of the person to permit application of hairspray" to the hair. Preferably the shield is made of hard plastic or other similar material and is transparent so as to permit ready observation of the hair of the person by the operator in-applying the hairspray. As ,shown in FIG. 2 the front portion of the shield is recessed and its edges are shaped to conform to the face and forehead of the person and fit relatively closely thereto so as to prevent the escape of hairspray from inside the shield.

The back portion of the hairspray shield is provided with a relatively large opening closable by means of a L-shaped cover 3 which is hinged to the shield 1 -by means of; suitable hinges 4 and the lower portion of which is provided with a U-shaped recess 5 adapted to fit closely around the neck of the person with whom the shield is used. The front ends 6 of the lower portion of this cover may be arranged on an inwardly projecting flange 7 on the lower portion of the front of the shield so as to retain the cover 3 in a closed position while the shield is being used to apply hairspray to the person. If desired the ends 6 of the cover 3 and the flanged portion 7 may be provided with a suitable depressions and dimples or other suitable means for retaining the cover in a closed position while in use.

Disposed at various points over the surface of the shield are a plurality of self-sealing closures 8 adapted to permit insertion of the nozzle of a hairspray can or gun 13 so that hairspray may be applied to all desired portions of the hair of a person in the manner shown in FIGS. 1 and 4. The detailed structure of these self-sealing closures is shown more particularly in FIGS. 2a and 2b where the circular frame 9, which may be of plastic material, is provided with an annular groove adapted to receive and retain a flexible washer 10 of rubber or other yieldable material having a small hole 11 in the center thereof to permit the insertion of the spray gun nozzle. These self-sealing closures are placed in the spaced holes cut in the plastic shield l and are secured thereto by suitable plastic cement. If desired the shield 1 may be provided with a suitable ring or similar attachment 12 to permit the shield to be suspended on a retractable cord above the head of the person with whom it is to be used and moved in the position when needed.

In use the cover 3 is first moved to its open position as shown by the broken-line representation in FIG. 4 so that this shield may be readily placed over the head of a person. After the shield is placed in position; the cover 3 is moved in its closed position. Hairspray may then be applied to the hair of the person by successively inserting the nozzle of the spray gun 13 through various ones of the self-sealing closures 8 until the desired result has been achieved.

As will be apparent from the foregoing description, the invention provides a simple, convenient and effective means for permitting the application of the hair spray to hair while preventing dispersion of the hairspray throughout the larger area in which the hairspray is being used, thereby preventing considerable annoyance and possible deleterious effects upon other persons present in the area.

I claim:

1. A hairspray shield comprising a transparent, helmet-like structure adapted to be placed over the head of a person, said shield being formed to provide a space between it and the hair of said person but so as to fit closely around the face and neck of said person to provide a substantially vapor-tight enclosure, and being provided with self-sealing closures at a plurality of points spaced over its surface, said closures being adapted to permit the insertion of the nozzle of a hairspray applicator to apply hairspray through said shield at various points to the hair of said person, said shield 4 opening shaped to conform substantially to the face and forehead of a person.

A hairspray shield according to claim 1 having an opening in the back thereof to permit ready positioning of the shield over the head of a person, and provided with a hinged panel for closing said opening, said panel having a portion extending forward substantially perpendicular to said back opening and having a U-shaped opening thereon conforming substantially to the neck of said person.

Claims

1. A hairspray shield comprising a transparent, helmet-like structure adapted to be placed over the head of a person, said shield being formed to provide a space between it and the hair of said person but so as to fit closely around the face and neck of said person to provide a substantially vapor-tight enclosure, and being provided with self-sealing closures At a plurality of points spaced over its surface, said closures being adapted to permit the insertion of the nozzle of a hairspray applicator to apply hairspray through said shield at various points to the hair of said person, said shield being effective to confine the hairspray to a limited region in the vicinity of the head of the person with whom the shield is being used, and to prevent dispersion of the hairspray throughout a larger region.

2. A hairspray shield according to claim 1 in which said helmet-like structure is made of hard, transparent plastic material.

3. A hairspray shield according to claim 1 having a recessed portion in the front thereof provided with an opening shaped to conform substantially to the face and forehead of a person.
