This invention refers to face protectors and especially relates to face protectors or wind stoppers of the type protecting substantially the whole face area, in contradistinction to such protectors or shades which have for their sole object to afford protection of the eyes of the user.

More particularly still, the present invention is concerned exclusively with the type of face protector forming substantially a cylindrical or slightly conical shield adapted to be applied with its one edge around the face of the user while being open at the front.

The invention has for its primary object to provide an improved face protector of said general type, and is principally distinguished by the feature that the protector, which is made from transparent material and is intended to enclose the whole face of the user with an airtight fit while presenting an open front. consists of two or more congruous flexible panes hinged to each other along two diametrically opposed lines so as to permit of being laid flat or plane to be conveniently stored when not in use.

Other features will appear from the following description and from the claims appended thereto.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the front and one side of the face protector. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the front and the other side of the face protector. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the face protector in flat or collapsed position.

Fig. 4 shows in perspective details of the device, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same details in assembled condition.

With reference to the drawing, it will be seen from the two figures compared with one another that the face protector according to the invention comprises two flexible, substantially rectangular panes I from transparent material, said two members being hinged to each other along two diametrically opposed lines by means of pieces of tape material 2 pasted onto the adjacent respective edge portions of the panes or members forming the main part of the protector.

The edge of the protector intended to form an airtight fit around the face of the user is slightly curved as shown in Fig. 3 to suit the outline of the users face, and in order not to hurt the skin of the user, and to further enhance the airtight fit, said edge is lined with a head 3 of some suitable soft packing material.

The face protector is kept in place around the face of the user by means of an ordinary elastic head strap 5 provided in known manner with a fastening clasp 6 and a runner 1 to adjust the length of the strap, said runner being of the type commonly employed in connection with neck-ties of the butterfly type.

An eye shield 8 is removably secured within the face protector by means of an attachment 9 consisting of a U-shaped clasp adapted to be thrust into position from the front of the face protector and to be retained in place through frictional engagement with the protector. This clasp is preferably made from elastic wire material, which is bent into a narrow loop presenting the shank portions 9a and 9b and then, in direct continuation at right angles to said loop, into a second narrow loop with the shank portions 8a and 8b. The design of the eye shield 8 and the attachment 9 appears from Fig. 4. As will be clearly understood from Fig. 5, the first mentioned loop is held in position on the protector through frictional engagement between the shank portions 9a and 91) on the one hand and the material of the protector pinched therebetween on the other hand. Likewise, the shank portions 8a. and. 8b of the second loop are adapted to receive and to carry the eye shield 8 therebetween by frictional engagement.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that the great advantage inherent in the invention is the possibility of laying a face protector of the general type in consideration into a flat or plane condition when not in use, whereby the whole device can be stored away in any convenient pocket without interfering with other items.

What I claim is:

1. A face protector or wind stopper of the type forming an airtight fit around the whole face of the user while presenting an open front, comprising, in combination, at least two congruous, flexible and transparent panes in juxtaposition when in hat condition, a hinge member uniting a pair of adjacent edges of the two panes, a second h nge member unitin another pair of adjacent edges of the two panes opposed to said first mentioned pair of edges, a. bead of soft packing material on a non-hinged pair of edges of the protector extending substantially at right angles to said hinged pairs of edges and intended to form an airtight fit around the face of the user, and an extensible head strap secured to said beaded pair of edges approximately midway of the same.

2. A face protector or wind stopper of the type forming an airtight fit around the whole face of the user While presenting an open front, comprising, in combination, at least two congruous,

flexible and transparent panes in juxtaposition when in flat condition, a hinge member of tape material uniting a pair of adjacent edges of the two panes, a second hinge member of tape material uniting another pair of adjacent edges of the two panes opposed to said first-mentioned pair of edges, a head of soft packing material on a non-hinged pair of edges of the protector extending. substantially at right angles to said hinged pairs of edges and intended to form an 10 airtight fit around the face of the user, an extensible head strap secured to said beaded pair of edges approximately midway of the same, an eye shield of transparent material and a means detachably mounted on said panes for holding 15 Number 4 said eye shield transversally between said panes when in spaced condition.
