LAURA J. WOLFE, OF COLUMBUS OHIO.
FILLING FOR- BEDCLOTHES AND THE LIKE.
Application fi1ed. January 3, 1910.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1910.
Serial No. 535,943.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA J WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling for Bedclothes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of comforts of that class which are employed as bed clothing and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction of comfort, the casing of which may be readily detached from or made to in close the usual filling of cotton or other material; to provide improved means for retaining the filling body in a desirable integral form; to provide improved means for detachably securing the filling body within the casing and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my improved comfort, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the filling member thereof, Fig. 3 is a view partly in transverse section and partly in perspective of the filling member, and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view through the laced end or mouth portion of the comfort body.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a comfort casing 1 which is in the nature of a sack of proper size, having one of its ends open. To the inner surfaces of the opposing lips 2 of the casing mouth, I sew the edge portions of the opposing strips 3 of heading, such beading being of any desirable pattern and comprisin strips of fabric each having a succession o lacing receiving openings in its central portion, these openings being indicated at 3. To each end of the casing mouth, I secure one end of a tape or lacing member, these members being indicated at 4L and 5, the member 4 being comparatively short as shown.
15 represents a comfort filling body of cotton or other suitable material, said body being of the usual flattened form and of a size adapted to be inserted within and incased by the casing 1. In producing this filling body, the cotton or other material is suitably compressed or matted together into the desired form andin such manner that said material is substantially integral. That is, it may be removed from the casing without becoming disintegrated, after which the marginal portions of the body are covered or bound by a suitable fabric, this binding being indicated at 6. The side and end members of the binding strips are in addition'connected by transverse and longitudinal binding strips 6 and 6 all of said binding members being sewed in connection with the filling body and serving to retain the latter in the substantially integral form shown. The filling body thus produced is adapted to be inserted" in the casing 1 through the mouth thereof, after which the lip members 2 are united by lacing the tape 5 back and forth through the openings 3 of the opposing beading strips 3. When the mouth of the casing has thus been closed, the end of the tape 5 is tied in connection with the short tape 4.
By the operation described, it will be seen that the usual knotting or quilting together of the filling body and casing and the closing of the mouth of the casing by sewing, is entirely obviated.
The improved construction which I have described, admits as will readily be understood, of. the mouth of the casing being quickly opened and the filling withdrawn therefrom when it is desired to wash the casing.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim, is
In bed clothing, of the class described, the combination with a casing having one end open, opposing beading strips secured with in the mouth of said open end, and lacing tapes secured at opposite ends of said month, one of said tapes adapted to be interlaced through the openings of said beading strips to close the rhouth of the casing and said In testimony whereof I afiix iny signature tapes adapted to be tied one to the other as in presence of two Witnesses.

and said marginal portions connected by in- C. O. SHEPHERD,
