` leggins or spatterdashes, such as described and claimed in the speeilication of Letters Patent granted to William G. Rule, dated Jan uary. 15, 1867, and numbered 61,265.

My invention consists in a novel construction of the elastic inetal frame and novel mode of inserting the same within the leggins or spatterdashes, whereby the manufacture of the leggins is much simplified, as will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying specification and the drawings annexed, which form part ofthe same.

, Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improved leggin or spattel-dash complete ready for use. Fig. 2 is an internal view'of the covering of a similar leg gin unfinished and spread open, with parts broken away in order to illustrate the mode of inserting the frame within it, and also showing one side of the sidebraces and portions of the spring, ankle, and knee-bands in position for insertion. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the linew m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the framing separately, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side braces. Fig. i is a perspective view of portions of the elastic irameLillustrating a slight variation from the construction shown in the other tigsteel doubled or folded upon itself in such manner that the two halves shall lie closely together and leave a loop, b, at one end for the passage and retention of the side brace D, while at the opposite end of it a loop, b', is formed for the passage a-nd retention of the side brace D. The loop b is formed by the return or folded end b2 of the spring, while the loop b' is formed by turning back a small portion of the outer layer of the spring and riveting the same to the inner layer, as shown at b3. The side braces, D and D', are formed ot' straight strips o`f band-steel, the upper ends, d, of which are bent over at d', so as to form hooks d2, adapted to hook respectively over the loops b and b of the side braces, D' and D', y

as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. At their lower ends, d4, the side braces, D D', are formed straight and flat, and are adapted to be passed through the loops b and b', respectively, of the spring ankleband B. Holes or perforations d5 d5 are formed in the ends d4 of the braces D D,'as shown in Fig. 4, by means of which the said braces may be stitched to the cover or body A, as hereinafter explained.

The cover or body A, on its inside, as shown by Fig. 2, is formed with horizontal pockets a, a', adapted for the reception of the ankle and knee bands B B', respectively. The pookets a a! are formed respectively by stitching.

In constructing a leggin or spatterdash according to my invention the pockets a a' and a2 and e3 are completed, as 'shown by Fig. 2, before their respective metallic parts are inserted, access to the pockets a and a being obtained through the pocket a?, which is left open or unstitched, as shown at Fig. 2, where a portion of the kneeband B is shown in position for insertion into the pocket a', While the similar portion of the ankle-band B is shown with its end just inserted within the pocket a. I irst insert the bands B and B into and through the pockets al and a', so that their loops b b shall enter the pocket a2, while the of the outer side brace, D', through the slit a6 loops b b are in position to correspond with the pocket a3 when closed. I then pass the end d' into the pocket co2. I then pass the said end through the loop b' in the knee-band B', and also through the loop b' of the ankle-band B. I then force the said brace D' fully home into the pocket a2, and as far as permitted by the hook d', which comes to a bearing on the top of the knee-band. I then secure the said brace in position by stitching it through the holes d5 d5, and through the covering A' and lining-piece A2. rlhe parts B B' and D having been placed in position, I now pass the end d4 ofthe side brace D' through the loops b of the bands B B' and place the same in proper position, as shown by Fig. 2, after which I close up the open side and ends of the pocket ai by stitching, after which I stitch the brace D in position through its holes d5 0l5 in a similar manner to that described in reference to the brace D'. The article is now complete.

The side braces,instead of having their lower ends made to project downward below the loops' bj b2 of the ankle-band, may have their lower ends made with hooks d, as shown in Fig. 6, like their upper ends,and these hooks may be hooked into the loops b b2 of the ankle-band after the bands and braces have been separately inserted into their respective pockets a a. a2 a3,- all that is then necessary to enable this to be done is to draw up or contract the lower parts of the covering and pockets sufficiently to enable the loops ot the ankle-band, which is already in the pocket a, to be passed over the ends of the hooks d6, and then to pull down or extend the covering. to -let the loop down into the hook d. The side pockets, a2 a3, being Vwith loops at their opposite ends, and two side braces formed with hooks at their upper ends to hook into the loops ot' the upper band, and passing through the loops of both bands, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with the covering A, provided with pockets att' aza, ofthe double coiled spring-bands B B', having looped ends, and the hooked side braces, D D', the said bands and braces being inserted in'to the said pockets, and being hooked into the loops of said double coiled spring, all substantially as hereil described.
