M. B. SELIGMAN.
GOLLAR.
APPLICATION IILBD MAY 20, 1913.

wnuzssss INVENTOR m 544d M, yfi/ mfli T Mat/4,,
MILTON B. SELIGMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLTiAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1913.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Serial No. 770,585.
1 '0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON B. SELIGMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Collar, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a collar in which the outer flap or extension has its buttonhole covered by a fly forming a pocket, so that access for the fingers in buttoning the collar may be had, while the head of the button is covered, so as to prevent wear or other damage to the neck-tie by said head, and the button head is concealed at all times.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
lhe annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a collar en1- bodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of one end of a collar eInbodying one form of my invention. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one end of a collar embodying another form of the invention. Fig. 4 represents a perspective. view of one end of still another form of embodiment of my invention. Fig. 5 represents a section of the form disclosed in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a section of the form disclosed in Fig. 8. Fig. 7 represents a sec tion of the form disclosed in Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates the inner band of a turned-down collar, having an outer band, 2. My invention may, however, be equally well applied to astanding collar. In the form illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5, a buttonhole, 3, is formed in the flap, 4:, of the inner band of the collar, and such button-hole is formed in the inner ply, only, of the band, the outer ply having two free edges and being secured to the inner ply by stitches, 5 and 6, above and to the side of the buttonhole, to form a fly, 10, so that easy access may be had for buttoning and unbuttoning the collar.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6, the button-hole is shown as formed through both plies of the flap and a separate piece of fabric, 7, is secured to the outer side of the flap by stitches, 8, and by stitches 5 and 6, similar to those of the form shown in Figs. 2 and 5, to form the fly 10.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 4 and 7, the piece of fabric, 9, which forms the fly, does not cover the entire flap, and is secured in the same manner as in the two preceding forms by the stitches 5 and 6, above and to one side of the button-hole.
It will be understood that while I have shown in Figs. 2 and 5, a collar formed of two ply, the invention may be employed with a collar of more than two ply, in which event, the button-hole 3 will be formed in all of the plies, excepting the outer ply, which serves as the fly 10, as heretofore explained, and it will be further understood that the separate pieces of fabric, 7 or 9, while shown connected with a two ply collar, may be secured to the outer side of the band of a collar having any number of plies.
In some instances, I may form the fly 10 of more than one ply or I may form the fly of one ply and secure a separate piece of fabric, as 7 or 9, thereto, to make said fly of suitable thickness, if occasion requires.
In all of the forms, the head of the collarbutton will be covered by the fly, thus protecting the necktie from wear and other injury, and concealing the button head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A collar having a band and a button-hole adjacent one end thereof, and adapted to receive a button, whereby the strain will be carried directly by said band, and an imperferate fly on the exterior of said band extending over said button-hole, whereby the head of a button, when seated therein, will be concealed, said fly being secured to the band on the opposite side of the button-hole from the the end portions of the collar may be ad end of the said band, and also secured above justed with respect to each other, as desired.
said button-hole and below the upper edge of the collar, so that the bottom and outer MILTON SELIGMAN' edges of said fly are free to permit ease of Witnesses: access to the button-hole covered thereby, O. D. MGVAY, from the front of said collar, and whereby M. E. BYRNE.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, -D. G.
