Description

(No Model.)
P. W. LOWE. GARMENT HOLDER AND STOCKING SUPPORTER.
No. 343,824. Patented June 15, 1886.
N. PETERS Fhnwmmgnphcr, Washinglon, o. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK. W. LOlVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARMENT-HOLDER AND STOCKING-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,824, dated June 15, 1886.
Application filed October 15, 1885. Serial No. 179,911. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK. W. Lows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas ment-holdersin which a fold of the garment is inserted into an opening and held by crowding into the narrowest part of same; but in those now in use it is found that the fold of the garment works up the wedge-shaped open;
ing and releases the garment.
The object of my invention is to remedy this defect by producing a garment-holder that, when applied, will retain its hold and not allow the garment to work loose.
The invention consists in making the holder with that portion in which the fold of the garment is inserted in the form of a hook, the space between the hook and the body being of the form of two or more curves, with its lower end turned to form an arc of a circle, so that when the fold is pressed into the curved portion it is so held as to be unable to work loose.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a garmentholder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the invention as applied to a sock or stocking supporter.
A represents the body of a garmentholder, constructed with a hook, B, the space between the hook B and body A having two serpentine or scalloped edges, the projections on one side or edge being opposite the depressions of the other side from about the point a, and terminating in a hook-shaped portion, as shown at c. The inner face of the hook B is curved outward from about the-point a, so that a fold of the garment to be held can easily be inserted.
The upper end of the bodyAis provided with an opening, 0, into or through which a strap can be passed.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the invention as applied to a sock or stocking supporter. D is a strap, to the lower end of which is secured the hooked supporter AB, and E is a metal loop at the upper end of the strap, for securing the same to a button on the dress, and F isaslide for regulating the length of the strap.
It will be seen that when a fold of the stocking or garment is inserted into the space between the hook Band body A, and pressed down into the curved portion, it will be prevented from working out of the same as the tendency will be for the fold to crowd more tightly toward the end 0, and thereby be more firmly held. When it is desired to release the garment, the fold has only to be pressed out as far as the point a, when it will be free.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A garment-holder consisting of a body, A, provided with an opening, 0, and hook B, the space between the hook B and body A having two serpentine or scalloped edges, the projections on one side being opposite the depressions on the other side, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A garment-holder consisting of a body, A, and hook B, the space between the body and book being curved, and terminating in a hook-shaped end, a, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK. XV. LOWE.
