BUTTON.
Patented May 4, 189'7.
W aw UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICEo EDVVARD FOSTER, OF MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,933, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed February 8, 1896. Serial No. 578,578. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, ED'WARD FOSTER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residin g at Montego Bay, Jamaica, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buttons designed, prim arily, for use upon pants or trousers; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap readily-applied trousers hitch or button whereby the uncomfortable and rather awkward position in which a man is placed by losing his trousers-button at the most undesirable time is avoided.
I provide a button or hitch designed to be carried on or by or attaohed to the braces instead of on the trousers and one that can be readily applied to any of the braces now in use. i
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a face view of the improved button. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail of the guard or protector for the buttonhole. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the"""' reinforce or protector in position. v Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the draw or suspenders, and buttonholes made vin the trousers, into which the buttons may be engaged, and as a protector or safeguard against the turn out of the buttons I provide a protector O, formed of a piece of wire given the proper shape, as shown in Fig. 3, and adapted to be sewed into the buttonhole between the cloth and so disposed with relation to the shackle that the latter will work in the bend thereof and thus prevent wear of the cloth.
Having thus described the invention, what ispolaimed as new is-- The combination with a garment, of a tronsers hitch or button, comprising a shackle with a button at each end and a buttonholeprotector formed of a single piece of wire bent between its ends to form a loop, open upon one side and adapted to be sewed to the buttonhole between the layers of the fabric of the garment in position to receive in its loop the shackle of said button, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 'specification in the presence of two Subscrib- ,ing witnesses.
EDWARD FOSTER.
