WITNESSES NITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOWERBY POGUE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,128, dated January 1, 1901. Application filed August 10,1899. Renewed .Tune 19, 1900. Serial No. 20,860. lNo model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN SowERBY POGUE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices,
and has more particular reference to a device of this class for use in securing articles of wearing-apparel, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like reference-characters denote like parts in the several views, and in which Figures 1, 2, and 3 are plan views, respectively, of the several members of a device constructed according to my invention. Figs. 4., 5, and 6 are respectively edge views thereof. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the several parts assembled and in extended position; Fig. 8, an edge view thereof with the parts in operative position; Fig. 9, a plan view thereof in connection with a necktie-band. Fig. 10 is a plan View thereof in connection with part of a suspender, and Fig. 11 an edge view of a modification thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I providea fastening device consisting of three members, respectively 11, 12, and 13. Each of the members 11 and 12 is provided at one end with a hole, respectively 14. and 15, and one end of the member 13 is bent over, as shown at 16, and provided with a hole 17, and a pivot-pin 18 is passed through the holes 15 and 17 in the order specified, pivotall-y securing the three members together in corresponding order, as shown in Fig. 7. The member 11 is provided with a stampedup projection 19 and the member 12 with a hole 20, adapted to be engaged thereby to lock said members together. The member 12 is also bent upwardly and inwardly, as at 21', at its outer end and provided in said end portion with a hole 22 and the member 13 at its outer end with a stamped-in projection 23, which engages the hole 22 and locks the members 12 and 13 together, as shown in Fig. 9.
The member 11 is provided at its outer end with a finger-catch 24C, and each of the members 11 and 12 is provided with a recess, respectively 25 and 26, in its edge portion, and these recesses are adapted to coincide and form an unbroken opening when said members are swung together.
The members 11, 12, and 13 may be formed of any desired edge contour, but are preferably curved, as illustrated.
In the practice of my invention the three members are pivoted into the relative positions shown in Fig. 7, and the shank of a collar-button 27 is passed into such position that the members 11 and 12, closing about the same, shall engage it within the recesses 25 and 26. The band of a necktie 28 is then passed upon the member 12, within the bent portion 21 thereof, and the member 13 is brought over it and secured, to the member 12. With the parts in this position the collar-button and necktie-band are secured in proper relative position, and even should the collar-button become disengaged from the shirt or button-hole therein the collar and tie will be retained in proper relative position, it being understood that the collar is passed upon the button 27 before the device described.
In Fig. 10 is shown a modification of adaptation of my invention in which a suspenderbutton 28 is substituted for the collar-button 27 (shown in Fig. 8) and a Suspender-tab 29 shown in position upon the button, and a belt may be substituted in this form of adaptation for the necktie-band 28. (Shown in Fig. 9.)
In Fig. 11 is shown a modified form in which the rearward member of the device previously described is provided with a hook 30 at either end, which hooks are adapted to engage the fabric 31 of a dress or other garment, and an ordinary button 32, sewed to said fabric, is substituted for the collar-button in the previously-described views. This construction adapts the device more particularly to womens use.
It is evident that I may considerably vary the construction of the elements employed in carrying out my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device of the class described, com prising two members pivoted together and provided with side openings which when the members are brought together, will register to form an unbroken opening and engage a button; and means connected with the upper of said members for engaging a tie or other band, said means comprising a plate adapted to be brought into a parallel relation with the members when they are in position upon the button, whereby the tie or other band will beheld against said button by the said parallel plate, and means for forming a closed connection between the free or lower end of the said extension or plate, and one of the said pivoted members, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising means or devices for engaging a button, which means or devices clasp at either side beneath said button, and project above and below the same; and a member r plate connected with the said button-clasping devices at one end thereof and pivoted with respect thereto, whereby it may be swung laterally and upwardly, said memberor plate projecting forwardly and thence at angles downwardly to range parallel with and in front of the said button-clasping devices, wherebyto hold a necktie or other hand between said member or plate and the said button'clasping devices, and means for forming a closed connection between said plate or member and the said button-clasping devices at the free or lower end of the former, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted members adapted to engage the shank of a collar-button, and a third pivoted member adapted to retain a necktie or other band between itself and said pair of members, and provided with means for engaging or locking to the latter, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device of the class described, a pair of pivoted members, each of which is provided with a recess in one edge, said recesses forming an unbroken opening when said members are swung together, and provided with means for holding a necktie or other band and devices for locking said members and necktie-holding means all together in engaging position, substantially as shown and described.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted members, one of which is provided with devices forengaging the fabric of a garment, said members being provided with devices for engaging a'necktie or other band, and with means for locking them in engaging position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 9th day of August, 1899.
JOHN SOI/VERBY POGUE.
