UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT N. HORNER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
S H l RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,242, dated December 7, 1880,
Application filed January 29, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT N. HORNER, of Baltimore city, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Myinvention relates to shirts; and it consists in a device by which the sleeves can be drawn up to any desired height and held securely without injury to the cult, and without compression on the arm or other discomfort.
H eretoi'ore various means have been employed for this purpose, such as elastic bands and catches, and tags sewed upon the sleeve and adapted to be connected to buttons above; but there are numerous disadvantages attending their use which have prevented them from being commonly used. while the usual plan of rolling up the sleeve to the desired point spoils the end.
My invention consists, more particularly, in a peculiar arrangement of buttons and buttonholes, with or without a transverse cut, by which the sleeve is held when drawn up, and it will 110w be more particularly described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the sleeve in both positions. Figs. 2 and 3 represent a modification.
A represents a shirt, and B a sleeve, both of the usual construction.
01 to are button-holes, which are placed at a convenient distance apart, and bis a button, secured upon the sleeve at a point some distance above the button-holes a a.
When the sleeve is to be drawn up the button-holes a, a are made to register with one another, and in that position the sleeve doubled over and the two holes buttoned over the button b. In this operation the lower partof the sleeve is not folded, nor is the end in any way injured, but remains smooth and unbroken.
In some cases I prefer to cut a slot or gore, c, in the sleeve between the button b and button-holes a, though in this case I generally use only one button-hole.
In either case as many buttons b can be used, one above another, as may be desired, so that the height of the sleeve may be adjusted at will.
This invention may be applied to all the various kinds of shirts, and, indeed, to any other kind of garment where its use might prove desirable. Its advantages over the old plan of rolling the sleeve up from the cuff, as well as over the various forms of elastic and metallic fasteners in use, will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
l. Ashirt-sleeve having button-holes formed in the body of the material, in combination with one or more buttons attached directly to the sleeve in line above said holes, the hole and button being arranged upon the sleeve in the manner shown, whereby the cuff may be drawn up and held, as set forth.
2. A sleeve provided with one or more button-holes, a, above the cuff, one or more buttons placed above such button-holes, and a slot or gore between, all substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT N. HORNER.
