GARMENT-STAY.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented Allg, 20, 1912.
Application filed September 15, 1911. Ser'i'al No. 649,518.
lState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Stays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and .useful improvements in garment stays and` more particularly to a corset stay, and my object is to provide a device of this character with improved means for securing the same to the garment.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a stay having a flexible means thereon intermediate of its ends for securing the same to the casing of the corset, and a still further obj ect of the invention resides in providing means at the ends of the stay for securing the same to the corset.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing notches in the side edges of the stay adjacent its ends, which are adapted to receive the thread by which the stay may be secured to the garment, and a further object resides in providing openings at the ends of the stay with which may be connected any desired means for additionally securing the stay to the garment.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple in construction, thereby readily and cheaply manufactured, one which when once applied, will positively remain in its desired position, and one which is extremely effective and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangementV of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in' the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a top plan view of the stay. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section as seen on line 2-2, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section as seen on line 3 3, Fig. l.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates the stay proper formed of a pair of metallic or other strips alined and held together at their ends by means of the usual or any preferred clips or caps 2. The stay or body portion lof the device is covered with paper orany other desired material V3 Vwhich will prevent the metal of the stay from contacting with the material of thev garment, and said stay has the side edges immediately adjacent the ends thereof, provided with the notches -ih-said notches being formed so as to receive therein the ends of t-he caps 2 and also adapted to receive therein the thread (not shown) for securingthe stay to the garment. These notches 4 may be the sole means provided on the stay for aiding in the securing of said stay to the garment, if desired, but I have also provided adjacent each end of the stay, a pair of openings 5, said openings being arranged in alinement and adapted to receive therein the thread or any other desired means for securing the device to said garment. IfV desired, the notches may be eliminated and only the openings 5 used as a means for securing the stay to the garment, but it will be seen that by using both means, the same may be more readily and securely held, and in using both means on one stay, I desi-re to preferably dispose the pairs of openings in such a manner that one opening is on each side of the horizontal plane of the alining notches which will allow said openings to coperate with the notches in the use of the thread for securing the device. I have also provided an additional means for securing the stay to the garment intermediate of its ends, which means consists ofa short flexible strip 6, preferably tape, riveted, as shown at 7 to the stay in a plurality of places. 'Ihis flexiblefstrip 6 is preferably positioned to one side of the central portion of the stay, and it will be seen that this port-ion 6 may be readily sewed or otherwise attached to the casing of the corset to secure the stay thereto intermediate of its ends.
Itis a well known fact that the present means for securingl stays in a corset'are a source of trouble, and it will be appreciated that with my improved means for securing stays to a garment, the many difficulties which have heretofore been experienced, will be obviated. It will further be seen that by providing notches in the side edges of the stay adjacent the ends thereof, a ready meansl is provided` for the reception of a thread to attach said ends to a garment, and
it Will still further be seen that by the additional provision of a pair of openings at each end of the stay, said stay may be more readily secured with less chance of disengagement from the garment. It Will still further be seen that I have provided a means intermediate of the ends of the stay for securing the same to the garment and that this means comprises a flexible strip, preferably a tape, which may be sevved or otherwise attached to the casing of the corset. It will still further be seen that my device, in all, is one of very simple and economical construction, whereby the same may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for WhatI claim is A corset stay, comprising a spring strip tending transversely slightly beyond the edges of the strip.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afIiX my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
