CORSET-STAY TIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed March 12, 1917. Serial No. 154,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ono MORTARA, a sub ject of the King of Italy, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Stay Ti s; and I do declare the following to be a fu 1, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive corset stay tip provided with internal projections to be forced into the stay covering when the tip is fiattened upon the end of the stay, the result being that the tip is effectively held against accidental detachment.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction to be hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the strip of metal of which the improved tip is constructed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the corners of the strip are bent upon one side of the latter to form the anchoring projections;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the tip;
Fig. 4 is a section at right angles to Fig. 3 on the plane indicated by the line 14 thereof; 7
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a corset stay equipped with two of the improved tips; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section on the plane of the line 66 of Fig. 5 showing more particularly the manner in which the internal projections of the tip are embedded in the covering of the stay.
It is now the common practice to stamp corset stay tips from a single strip of metal and to flatten them upon the ends of the stays to secure them in place, but since no means is provided for affording an effective connection between the tip and stay, the
former often becomes detached. It is therefore the aim of thepresent invention to pro- Gopies 01 this patent may be obtained for vide the required connection in a simple and inexpensive manner and to this end the construction shown in the drawings above briefly described is employed.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 has reference to a single thin strip of metal whose ends are cut at right angles to its side edges as shown at 2 to provide sharp corners 3. These corners are folded onto one side of the strip 1 as shown in Fig. 2 and by the usual stamping operation, said strip is shaped into the form of a U having an internal channel a in which the inwardly turned corners 3 are located as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, said corners lying flat against the sides of the channel.
The channel 4 receives therein one end of the stay 5 which, as shown in Fig. 6, is provided with the usual covering 6 of paper or the like. The tip is then flattened upon the stay in the usual manner so .that the corners or projections 3 are embedded in the covering 6 as illustrated in the figure of the drawings last referred to. Ihe tip is thus effectively anchored in place and will remain in its proper position throughout the life of the corset.
On account of the inexpensive nature yet high efficiency of the construction shown and described, it constitutes the preferred form of my invention, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, minor changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
I claim A corset stay tip formed of a single strip of metal with its ends cut at right angles to its side edges to form sharp corners, said corners being folded onto one side of the strip and the latter being bent into the form of a U with an internal channel to receive the end of the corset stay, the aforesaid inwardly bent corners being located in said channel to be forced into the stay covering when the tip is flattened upon said stay.
