PATENT OFFICE.
. JAMES P. CHAPLIN, OF NEW MARTINSVILLE, WV EST VIRGINIA.
HOOP-END FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,840, dated December 20, 1904. Application iled May 19,1904. Serial No. 208,715.
, To (L7/Z whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. CHAPLIN, a resident of New Martinsville, in thecounty of IVetZel and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoop-End Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved hoopend fastener, and more particularly to an improved device for joining the ends of a hoopband to form a perfect smooth hoop, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which will be of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, easily applied and which will present no sharp edges, which can be driven onto a barrel, bucket, or like device without injury, and which will not weaken the hoop in the slightest, being practically as strong as the main portion of band of the hoop.
lith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangementsof parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 'a view in elevation, illustrating a hoop provided with my improved end-fastener. Figs. 2 and 3 are views in cross-section at right angles to each other, and Fig. 4 is a View of the fastener removed.
l represents a hoop-band which is preferably composed of a metal strip with longitudinal edges turned back flat against the body of the strip and one edge corrugated or crimped to compensate for the usual shape of barrels or buckets and like devices.
My improved fastener comprises a sheet of metal 2, preferably of a metal thicker and stronger than the metal of the band and provided at its ends with tongues 3, projecting in opposite directions.
In applying the fastener the ends of strip are bent back and the tongues 3 are bent inward and interposed between the bent ends of the strip or band l and all hammered or pressed flat, securely locking the tongues 3 between the turned end of the band and the main portion thereof and securely fastening or connecting the ends of the band and forming a perfect hoop of uniform width throughout and oering no sharp or rough edges.
A hoop so constructed can be applied at the end or in the middle portion of a barrel or bucket Without injury to the barrel or bucket or being a source of danger to those handling the same.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
l. The combination with a hoop, of a fastener comprising a plate having tongues projecting from its side edges at both ends, the tongues at one end spaced from the tongues at the other end, said tongues bent to embrace the hoop near the ends of the latter and the ends of the hoop bent upon the bent tongues of said plate.
2. The combination with a strip of sheet metal havingits longitudinal edges bent back upon itself and one edge crimped or corrugated, of a metal plate having tongues projecting from its side edges at its ends, the tongues at one end spaced from those at the other end, said tongues bent back toward the plate and embracing the corrugated strip and the ends of the strip bent upon the tongues on the plate and clamping them against the body of the strip.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscril ing witnesses.
