` y FILL'MORE n. sMITHpoF sYRAcUsE, New Yoan.
` Leners Patent No. 107,963, dated october 4, v1870.
` IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY PAPER-BlNDERS. l
The Schedule referred to in` these Letters Patent and making part of the same;
ne nknown um T ,fFILLMoRE M. summer syracuse, in`tb`ec0unty of Onondaga' in the State of New York-,bava invented a new and usefnlClasp `or Binder 'foryFiling Newspapers and other Periodicals;
and Ido hereby declare that the following is' a full,
. clear; andexact-description of the construction .and y operation of the `same, reference beinghad tothe annexed dr wing' making a part of this specification,
in whiehle`` l Figure 1-is a perspective View.
- Figure Zis a longitudinal elevation.
. Figure 3 is also a longitudinal elevation,showing the'position oigtheelastic band, which holds ticnthe upper Vand lower plates.
in `posiligurc ,4 isa horizontal plan or projection of one offthefplates,showing-the upper or outer surface of l the'plate and th'e bridge or support, and the slot in the bridge.`
l Figure-5 is ahorizontal'plan of one of the plates,
showing'the lower or' inner surface of the plate,- tof,
gether with the -slot inthe plate, which slot i`s better seen'in fig. 1,.l. w
Figure 6 is atransversesectionof one of the plates," showing vthe position `of' the band upon the bridge, passing thence through the slot liu the plate. Theglettcrs represent the `same parts -in the different iiguresjn which they app'ear. l l
rIhe natureof my invention *consistsI infdisposing twomet-al' plates, of suitable size and shape, which .are joined and `held inv position byan elastic band,l
strap,` or cord, solthat one of the plates, with a porytion 'ofgthe band attached, may be, pressed ordraWn throughthefolded margin of a newspaper or peri-A odical, and so thatthe elasticfband, vin contracting, will'draw back the p late f\vithits inner face against the paper, holding the papersfso incl'os'ed firmly between the two plates. l l
' To Venable'others skilled-in the art to make and use Vmy invention# willproceed to .describe its crmstruc-` tion and operation.
. If take anyfsnitablemetai, or alloy, rolled' into thin sheets or strips, and eut 'out thence, by meansv (if-suitable appliances, small plates or disks, having the dimensions,iu general, of about one inch in*V length, `and onefhalflan inch in breadth, and one.- .tiventyfonrth of an inch in thickness.
1n these plates, in theidirection oi' .their greatest length, I cut or punchanslot or opening', having `the general measurement of abontone-half an inch in length by about Aone-twelfth of `an inch in breadth, so thatthe portion thus .punched out shall not be broken cti, but arched upward and stretched, forining thebridge or supportb,` as better shown in fic. 2. lIn this bridge b 1 also cut the slot or opening e.'
.I then insert the' elastic band c, first, through the slot d, in the plate f, then through the slot c in the bridge,fand
adjust the said band c` so that it shall' rest upon the bridge, substantially as shown in iig. 3.
I then insert and adjust the other end o f the baud into and upon a second fplate, f,-0f similar construction, in asimilar manner, sothat the posiy'tions of the, band c and the twoV plates f and f shall be substantially as shown in iig.' 3.
` Oncendtg of the upper -plate terminates in a s harp point, andthe edges of the plate meeting at the point g are also sharpened, as shown in fig. 6, sov that the plate shall readily cut the paper which it pierces without tearing thepaper more .than is intended..
In making use of' my invention, the sharp eud'g of the upper plate f is pressed through the margin of the paper, which is intended-to 'be led, so that the -incision thus made shall be parallel to the edge of the paper, and, by the stretching of'` the elastic band c, the plate f and a portion of the band care' drawn through .the incision in the paper.
.Thelelastic band c is then allowed to contract, so that `the plates-f f shall press against' the paper, holding firmly-together the'paper or papers thus incloscd between the plates, and substantially as shown in the perspective drawing,` ig. 1.
The loopa, iig. 3, isintended.toadmit a chain orl cord, by which the'clasp and papers attachedmay beA hung upf when desired.
It is obvious that thc bridge b, instead' of being.'
continuons .with the plate f, may be made o fa single piece or of' two'pieces; separatefrom the plate, and then soldered or riveted to the plate, forming a bridge or support for the elastic baud, substantially as-shown in Iigs. 1, fl, and 3. Y
What I 'claim as my invention, and desire to secureby'LettersfFatent, is
1.v The combination of, the slot d in a metallicplate,
`and the bridge or support b, andthe slot c in the 'bridge,substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
,-2. The combination of 'the metallic substantially as hereinbefore described', with the elastic band, strap, or cord c, substantially as. and for the purpose hereinbei'oreset forth. i
