LANING L. FERRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BILL AND LETTER FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,294, dated April 6, 1880.
Application filed February 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LANING L. FERRIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bill and Letter Files, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to files for receiving bills, letters, &c.; and the object of my invention is to furnish a file which will permit inspection or removal of the papers upon, it and may be used for binding the papers together.
My invention consists of a plate secured by a set-screw to a suitable base and carrying two fixed and two removable arms or wires which curve inward, the points of the fixed wires overlapping the points of the removable wires, so that the bills may be inserted between the points and pressed upon either pair of wires. The removable wires are eye-pointed to receive a cord, and may be drawn down through the plate when the latter is removed from its support.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved file. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation; and Fig.3 is a perspective view illustratin g the use of the file in binding bills, 850.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the base or support of the file, which base is preferably made of wood and of suitable size and shape. B is a metallic plate secured to the base A by the screw-pin a and butterfly-nut b, as shown, which permits removal of the plate B when required. At one end of plate B there are fixed two wires, 0 c, that project upward and are bent inward, and have their ends sharpened to a point. At the other end of plate B there are wires d, that are the two ends of a single piece of wire, which is bent beneath the plate B in the form shown in Fig. 3, so that when the ends (I are inserted through the plate and the plate secured on the base the wire is held rigidly in place.
The wires cl curve inward, and their pointed ends terminate just beneath the ends of wires 0. The ends of wires 61 are perforated at c to receive a cord.
In use the bill, letter, 'or other paper is placed on the file by inserting one edge between the points of the wires 0 d, as shown in Fig. 2, and then turning the bill over upon the wires 0 or drawing it down upon the wires (1.
This construction permits the papers on the file to be separated or placed a portion 011 each pair of wires, so that any one may be readily inspected or removed.
When it is desired to bind the papers on the file cords are placed in the eyes of wires d, the plate B is removed from the base A, and the wires (1 through the papers, as shown in Fig. 3, thus freeing the papers from the file with the cords through them.
Upon the wires 0 there are rings or marks 11, which serve as guides to insure the perforation of the bills at a proper distance from theired ge.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pattent- The combination, with the slotted plate B, of the two curved wires 0 c and the double wire 01, having perforations e, that receive a cord, the points of said wires 0 d interlapping, as and for the purpose specified.
