UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN J. CHRISTIE, OF HENDERSON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEWSPAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,488, dated August 12, 1879 application filed June 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. CHRISTIE, of Henderson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Paper Files and Binders; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a transverse section of my improved file and binder. Fig. 2isaperspective view thereof, and Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in paper files and binders; and the nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with the spring-actuated jaws, of a swinging slotted plate having an eye in its end, and a second swinging plate engaged by its end with the slot of the first plate, the two plates constituting convenient openers for the jaws, and the eye means for hanging up the file.
It also consists in certain other novelties, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter-A designates the head of my improved newspaper file and binder, the same being concave on its under side and usually convex on top, as shown in Fig. 1.
B indicates springs formed of strap-steel and of oval shape. As many of these as may be desired are fastened, by riveting or otherwise, to the concave under side of the head, at suitable distances apart, and their smaller ends down.
0 indicates the clamp-plates or jaws, being usually of wood, and of the form of a rectangle. These are bolted or riveted to the branches of the springs B, with their lower edges, that taper to a point, in contact, or nearly so, with each other, as shown in Fig. 2.
These devices constitute the file or clip.
D indicates oblong metallic plates, pivoted to the jaws O at a, and provided at the other end with a ring or eye, b. They are also provided with a curved slot, 0.
D indicates similar plates, pivoted at a to the said jaws, and provided near their free ends with a pin, i, engaging the slotc and working therein. This slot-and-pin connection of the plates permits them to be folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, or extended, as in Fig. 4;. In this latter position the eye serves as a means of attaching the file to a nail, or for hangingit up, and the plates as levers, by the compression of which the jaws are opened and the papers introduced between them.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The clip consisting of the concave head A, the oval springs B, secured to said head, and the clamps 0, extending the length of the clip-head and secured each to a leg of the spring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in apaper-file, with the head A, oval springs B, and clamp-jaws O, of the plates D D, pivoted to the said jaws, the former having the eye I) and slot 0, and the latter the pin 3, working in said slot, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN JOSEPH CHRISTIE.
Witnesses:
M. F. OZIER, F. W. WALLINGTON.
