Description

@uitrit tang 'strnt @fnf GEORGE -W. EMERSON, OFy CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
Lettere-.Patent N0.'79,560, mamey 7, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
TOALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
y Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EMERSOrLot' Chicago, in the county4 of Cook, in theStete of Illinois',I have invented n. new and improved Temporary Binder forkling and binding papers, sheet music, and periodicals of all kinds; and I dohereby declare that 'the following isla. full und exact description thereof, reference` being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists innttahing a strip of'steel-tempered hoop-skirt wire, or equivalent, to the back edge of each lid ofe common music-portfolio, which strips. are so firmly pressed-upon the papers, by means of needle and cord, and the fastening of same, as to electuztlly prevent a-ny movement or oscillation of the papers, thus securing their perfect preservation. A i i I To enable others skilled in the srt to maleand use my'nvention, I will proceed to describe its constriiction and operation. i s
Figure 1 is a. planvi'ew `with the binder open.
Figure 2 is-a transverse section.
As will be at once seen from the drawings, the binder is made in the style of a. common music-portfolio. The steel-.tempered hoop-skirt wires, C, gs. 1a.nd 2, or equivalent, are encased in cloth or other suitable material, which is firmly glued'or otherwise fastened to either side-of the-lid A, iigs. 1 and 2, before th'e back B, gs. 1 and 2, is nttsched to lids A. This holds the hoop-skirt wires C firmly lto place for near the entire length of lids A, and fully one-eighthnof an inch from their edge, and, in connection with'cords E, figs. 1 and 2, and their fstenings, D, gs..1 and 2, secures to lids A a {irm'yet'perfect hinge, thus p'reventing ztny strsn on the cords E while the binder is in actualv use, and etfectunlly prevents any oscillating or wearing of the papers H, fig. 2. i
i The fastenings D are made ot' wire, or other suitable material, and are attached to hoop-skirt wires, C, by passing the ends through holes made 'for the purpose, and bending them down in opposite directions, or they my be ntt'nched' in any other convenientway, thus forming a, wedge-shaped receptacle for and a spring upon cords E. The cords E are passed through hoop-skirt wire C at hole G, and secured by-knot or otherwise. With needles F, fig. 1, the cords E are passed through pepers H, and through eyeleted holes in hoop-skirt wire C,
below or throughr fastenings D,'a.nd are finally secured by winding tightly srou'nd and under the-ends o f- `.'t'sstenings D, when the needles F may beinserted in materiel` encasing hoop-skirt Wire C.
What I claim as my invention, onddesire to secure by Letters Patent,l is- The steel-tempered hoop-skirt wire C, or other suitable material, in combination with the fastenings D, one
or more, or equivalent, the needles F, and the cords E, one or more, snbstantially as aud for the purpose set forth.
GEO. W, EMERSON.
