IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,682, dated April 16, 1872 5 antedated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, J oHN (l. JENSEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Metallic Paper-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view ofthe paper-fastener as stamped from sheet metal, prior to being folded for use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same when folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same when folded. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the fastener, inserted in a hollow metallic blade employed in connection with the fastener for passing the same through paper; and Fig. 5 is a side View of the blade.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to a metallic fastener for fastening together two or more sheets of paper, in connection with a hollow metallic blade for making the necessary perforations in the'paper, with which and at the same time to insert the fastener, and so that one or more ofthe sheets of paper may be removed, either from the front or back, Without removing the fastener; andthe improvement consists in the construction of the fastener and of the blade i in connection therewith, for the purposes aforesaid, which will be more fully understood from the following description:
In the drawing, A represents the metallic fastener in the form as stamped from thin O is a hollow metallic blade, of any suitable metal, made tapering, pointed, and sharp upon both of its edges.
In using my metallic fastener, I insert either of the ends a and b in the opening at the heel of the blade, as shown at D, and then bend the other ends of said parts a and b downward and laterally, as shown at d d, forming a head or base by which the blade is pressed and forced through the paper, and in connection therewith one-half of the fastener. The blade is then removed from the fastener and the ends ofthe fastener pressed and flattened down upon the sides of the paper, thus forming a firm ,-secure and double fastener to the several sheets of paper. It will be observed that when it is desired to remove any of the .sheets of paper, fastened as aforesaid, from the front or back, it is only necessary to bend the points or parts of the fastener on the side desired back to their original position on a line With the opening through the paper, without removing the fastener wholly from the paper.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The double metallic paper-fastener B, formed of one piece of metal, slit or opened from its ends to near its center, and provided with the projections C, and folded together, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose'deseribed.
2. The combination of the blade C with the fastener B, substantially as andrfor the pur pose described.
The foregoing specification of my invention signed by me this 22d day of June, A. D. 1871.
JOHN C. JENSEN.
