Specification of Letters Patent.
I iatented Mar. 23, 19515.
Application filed April is, 1913. serial in. 762,032.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MGGIN- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, v
' vention consists of certaln'novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor "details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification: Figure 1 shows a front view of the tie to which the improved thereof showing the bow folded to hide the securing means of the clip. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view. Fig. 4c is an enlarged sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view showing the method of attaching the lace terminals to the clip,,the bow being removed for the sake of clearness. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clip.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a shoe, 11 the lace 2 blank near the other thereof, and 12 designates in general a bow and the clip attached thereto and forming the subject-matter of this invention.
. The clip is formed from a single blank of resilient sheet metal 13 having pointed fastening tabs 14 on the edges and further having stop tabs 15 on the edges, there being an oblong slot 16 formed in the blank near one end and there further being a sub- .oblong tongue 17 struck from the end with the free eX-, trernity extending toward the slot 16. An eye 18 is struck from one edge of the blank near the oblongslot 16. The blank-is bent stantially centrally upon itself as shown in Fig. 6
with the tongue 17 arching through the oblong slot 16 andthe stop tabs 15 being bent to abut that portion of the'blankcarrying thefastening tabs, the latter being bent to.
project beyond the reverse face of the blank. The eye 18 is bent to register with the arch 1n the tongue 17.
In forming the bow a single 'length of ribbon is bent preferably three times upon itself as shown at 19, 20 and 21. 1k stiffening blank of cardboard 22is inserted between the folds 20 and 21. An additional length of ribbon 23 is secured by a line of stitching 24: or otherwise at one end to the fold 19 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The
' clip is then placed upon the ribbonj23 and the fastening tabs passed through the folds 'of the folded ribbon and stiffening cardboard, the tabs being finally clenched as shown in Fig. 6. The free end of the ribbon 23 is then secured terminallyby a line of stitching 25 or otherwise to'the foldv 22 of the folded ribbon as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. b
As will be. seen by referringto Figs. 4:
at one end with a hook 26 which is engaged with the eye 18 of the clip. After the lace has been drawn taut through the lacing eyelets 27 of the shoe, the free end of the lace 1s passed'back of the plate 13 and then As shown in Fig; 6 of the drawings, the device'is provided with a lug or tab 27 extending upwardly from the bottom of the slot 16- and in parallel relation to the adjacent wall of the clip. As the blank is formed wholly of resilient material the lug serves as a second spring bearing against the spring 17 to increase the clamping-pressure exerted thereby.
What is claimed, is V A clip including a single elongated length of spring metal having one end formed with a longitudinal struck-up tongue, said tongue being bowed in length, the opposite end of said length being bent back upon the first named end andformed with a longitudinal and 5 the shoe lace 11 is terminally equipped I slot receiving said tongue, aportion of said tongue arching through said slot, tabs on the tongue to increase the clamping pressure exside edges of said slotted portion of said erted by the tongue. o length bearing against the portion carry- In testimony whereof, I affix my signaing said tongue, fastening means for the ture, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 last named portion of said tab, and there CHARLES W. MGGINLEY.
being a tab struck from one end edge of Witnesses: said slotnnd bearing terminally upon the CHARLES MGGINLEY, tongue and exerting a pressure against the I Jnssn G. MULFORD.
