llnirrnn STATES J OIIN S. WEAVER AND JOSEPH B. WEAVER, OF NEW OXFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,699, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed May 18, 1896- Serial No. 591,981. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN SWEAVER and JOSEPH B. WEAVER, of New Oxford, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Trough, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved trough which is simple and durable in construction, completely wator-tight, and constructed without the use of rivets or like fastening devices.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with parts in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The improved trough is provided with a body A, made of sheet Inetalor like material and curved into semicircular form, as
plainly indicated in the drawings. Into each end of the body A is fitted a head 13, conforming to the inner face of the body A,with the top fiat and flush with the top edges of the body A. This head Bis preferably made of cast metal, and the head is securely held in place on the top bya band O, shrunk onto the exterior surface of the body A and the top of the head B, so that the latter forms a water -tight joint with the body. On the outer face of the head B may be fastened or formed a leg D for supporting the trough above the ground.
The edges of the heads B are made broad to provide a wide bearin g-surface for the body of the trough and also to allow the upper portions of the bands O to lie snugly against the horizontal edges of the heads.
The top edges of the body A are preferably protected by strips E, of sheet metal, and bent approximately into U form, so as to fit snugly onto the inner or outer surfaces of the body, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. This strip E not only protects and strengthens the edge of"tlie bodyfbut it also prevents the stock train being cut when coming in contact with the sharp edges of the sheet-metal body.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A trough, comprising a semicircular body, semicircular heads having their straight top portions of the same width as the curved portions, said heads fitting in the ends of the body between the heads thereof with their outer faces flush with the ends of the body and their straight portions or tops flush with the upper edges of the said body, bands of the same width as the heads and shrunk upon the exterior surfaces of the body and the top of the heads, and protecting-strips on theupper edges of the body between the heads, sub stantially as described.
2. A trough, consisting of a semicircular body, semicircular heads having their straight top portions of the same width as the curved portions, said heads fitting in the ends of the body with their outer faces flush with the ends of the body, and their straight portions or tops flush with the upper edges of the said body, bands of the same width as the heads and shrunk upon the exterior surfaces of the body and the tops of the heads, U-shaped protecting-strips on the upper edges of the body between the heads thereof, and legs secured to the outer faces of the heads, substantially as herein shownand described.
JOHN S. WEAVER. JOSEPH B. WEAVER.
