Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed February 4, 1907. Serial No. 355,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB H. SIMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiel, county of Manitowoc, and State of Visconsin, have invented new and'useful Improvements in Milk-Vats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in milk vats and it pertains to that class in which the milk receptacle is formed of a plurality of separate sections of sheet metal, the
contiguous edges of'which are secured together by seams and strengthening flanges. As the vats are subjected to great strain and pressure, the seams as heretofore made are frequently torn asunder or so sprung out of shape as to leak.
The object of my present invention is among other things to provide auxiliary means of strengthening the oints or seams at the junction of the several sections so as to resist the excessive strain to which they are subjected, whereby that portion of the vat at the junction of the sections will resist as great a strain as any other portion of the vat.
The construction of my invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top view thereof, and Fig. 2 a transverse section drawn on line w-x of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters in both views.
1 represents the milk receptacle which is formed of a plurality of separate sections 2 which are joined together by seams and strengthening flanges, the contiguous edges of the section being bent downwardly and outwardly, forming flanges 3 which are secured together by rivets 4, located at short intervals apart and by solder.
My present invention pertains more especially, however, to the auxiliary strengthening flanges or disks 5, the upper edges of which are bent over parallel with and adapted to rest upon the inner upper surface of the vat at the junction of the several sections 2, while the lower portions 6 of said disks, are formed at right angles to their upper portions and inserted between the vertical flanges 3, 3, and such flanges and disks are permanently secured together by the transverse rivets 4 when all of such parts are soldered together in the ordinary manner. Thus it is obvious that the strain which has heretofore been concentrated at the junction of the several sections 2 is resisted and distributed over a greater area by the disks 5. The vats thus formed are supported from their sides and ends in the ordinary manner from a rectangular frame 7 and such parts are preferably re-inforced by a plurality of trusses 8 located at short intervals apart beneath the vat and the longitudinal strengthening bars 9, 9, said longitudinal bars and trusses being also of the ordinary construction.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a milk vat of the described class the combination of a plurality of sections of sheet metal having their contiguous edges bent outwardly at right angles to their central portions and secured together so as to form seams and strengthening flanges and re-inforcing disks located at the junction of the longitudinal and transverse seams of the several sections, the upper edges of said reinforcing disks being bent at right angles and their lower portions parallel with and secured to the bottom of the vat above the transverse seams, while the lower vertical edges of said disks are secured between the strengthening flanges of the longitudinal seams and means for securing said strengthening flanges and disks together.
2. A milk vat of the described class comprising a plurality of sections of sheet metal secured together in parallel longitudinal series, the seams between the sections of one series being formed in line width the seams of the next adjacentseries and reinforcing disks located at the junction of four adjacent sections, one re-inforcing disk being turned over and upon the transverse seam upon one side of the longitudinal seam and the other disk being bent over in the opposite direction upon the transverse seam and upon the opposite side of said longitudinal seam while the lower vertical edges of said disks are secured between the strengthening flanges of the lon gitudinal seams, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GOTTLIEB II. SIMON.
