UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS ALEXANDER SINCLAIR, OF MOTTVILLE, NEW YORK.
METAL SPLICE FOR UNlTlNG THE ENDS OF CANE STRIPS FOR CHAIR-SEATINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,731, dated October 6,1885.
Application filed June 14, 1884. Serial No. 134,857. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. SINCLAIR, of Mottville, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metal Splice for Uniting the Ends of Cane Strips for Ohair-Seatings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved metal splice or tie for splicing and uniting the ends of cane strips used in making cane chair-seatings.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved metal splice or tie for uniting the ends of cane strips for chair-seatings. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the manner of holding the ends of the strips; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form thereof.
A metal plate, A, of any suitable shape, is
provided with three parallel transverse slots, B, and with side flanges, A. The ends of the cane strips E are secured to the plate by passing them through the middle slot, B, from the upper to the lower surface of the plate, and then through the end slots, 13, from the lower to the upper surface of the plate, so that the strips will press their ends upon the end crosspieces of the plate, thus holding said ends securely in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is p 1. A metal splice for uniting cane strips, consisting of a plate having side flanges and transverse slots, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a metal plate having three transverse slots, of two cane strips having their ends passed over the plate and through the middle slot, then under the plate and through the end slots from the bottom upward, substantially as herein shown and described.
FRANCIS ALEXANDER SINCLAIR.
