UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DAY, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT .lN GAS-PURIFVING HURDLES OR TRAYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,729, dated July 7, 1874 application filed June 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. DAY, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lime-Supporting Hurdles for Gas-Purifying Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 denotes a top view of a lime-supporting device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of the same.
My invention has reference to that class of devices used in gas-purifying box for supporting the lime employed for eliminating the impurities of the gas.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, effective, and durable device for such purpose; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the said drawing, A A denote two reetangular wooden bars, and B B two cylindrical grooved bars, the same being tenoned or otherwise suitably connected together, and constituting the sides and ends of the frame. (J is a cylindrical bar disposed transversely of the frame and near the middle thereof. In long hurdles two of such bars may be employed. Each of the bars B is formed with a series of annular grooves, a a, &c., around its periphery, such grooves having a width and depth sufficient to receive a series of flexible cylindrical bars or rods, 1) b, &c., which are made of rattan or other suitable wood, such rods being embedded therein, so that their upper surfaces shall be flush or about so with the outer surfaces of the bars B B. The rods 1) are made of flexible material so that they may be bent and strained around the grooved bars B B, and fastened 'to the under side thereof by pins or staples 0 c, &c., as shown in Fig. 2. These rods may, if desirable, be fastened to the top of the bar or bars 0, by pins or staples, as shown in Fig.1. These rods I arrange at such distance apartas will prevent the lime from falling through the spaces between them, which, in practice, I make about equal in width to the diameter of the rods.
Having describel my invention, what I claim is The improved lime supporting device or hurdle, consisting of the rectangular bars A A, grooved bars B B, one or more transverse bars, 0, and the series of flexible rods 1) I), &c., arranged and combined together substantially in manner as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. W. DAY.
