UNITE S'rA'rns Parent ALBERT OOOLEY, OF OSGEOLA, IOXVA.
STACK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,638, dated August 4, 1
Apnlication filed April 21, 1854. (do model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT CooLnY, of Osceola, in the county of Clarke and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stack-Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation, partly in section, of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner side of one of the sections. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the inner side of an adjacent section.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the covering of stacks of hay and grain to protectthem from the weather.
The invention consists of the combinations of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The cover is formed in sections of any desired length and convenientwidth. Each section is formed of one or more boards, A, having cross-bars attached to it near its ends. Upon one side of the cover the boards A have cross-bars B attached to their inner sides at a distance from their upper ends equal to the thickness of the said boards, and cross-bars O at any desired distance from theirlowerends. The adjacent sections have crossbars 1) attached to thci r inner sides at a distance from their upper ends equal to the thickness of the said boards increased by the width of the cross-bars B, and cross-bars E at a distance from their lower ends equal to the distance of the cross-bars C from the lower ends of their boards increased by the width of the crossbars G, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The corresponding section-boards, A, for the other side of the cover have the cross'bars B at a distance from their upper ends equal to the thick ness of the said cross-bars, and the crossbars I) at a distance from the upper ends of the said boards equal to the sum of the width and thickness of the said bars B. The crossbars B O D E are made of a length equal to twice the width of the section-boards A, and are attached to the said boards in such a manner that the said bars will project equally at the opposite edges of the said boards, as shown. in Figs. 2, S, and i. \Vith this construction, when the sections of each side are placed edge to edge the cross-bars D E will fit in between the cross-bars B O, and the upper ends of the boards A of the sections upon one side will fit into the angle between the boards and top crossbars of the sections upon the opposite side, as shown in Fig. 1. In the corresponding edges of the opposite sectionboards are formed notches F to receive the keys or locking-bars G, the shoulders of the said notches F being so inclined that the loching-bars G will be horizontal, as shown on Fig. 1. The locking-bars G are made wlth shoulders H upon the lower sides of their ends, which shoulders are so inclined as to lit upon the outer surfaces of the boards A, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the cover will be held firmly in place by the outward pressure of the stack against the lower parts of the coversections. To each sectionboard A is hinged a hook, I, to engage with a pin or staple, J, attached to the adjacent section-board, so as to keep the sections in place laterally. Vith this construction the cover will be put on and taken oil in sections, and may be extended to any desired length.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A staclecovcr, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consist ing of sections provided with projectingcrossbars, the bars on adjacent sections being at different distances from the ends of the sections, said sections also having edge notches to receive locking-bars, substantially as and tor the purpose set forth.
2. In a staclecover, the adjacent sectionboards A, having projecting cross-bars B C and D E at diilerent distances from their ends, substantially as herein'shown and described, so that the said projecting cross-bars will overlap each other and the section-boards, as set forth.
3. In a stack-cover, the combination, with the section-boards A, having notches F, with inclined shoulders in their corresponding edges, of the locking-bars G, having inclined shoulders H, and the hooks I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said sections will be held securely in place, as set forth.
ALBERT COOLEY.
