HAT HOLDER. APPLIoATIox HLnn JUNI: 1s, 1907.

GERTRUDE AUBUOHON, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
HAT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1'7, 1908.
Application filed June 19, 1907. Serial N o. 379,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE AmsUcHoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeii'erson City, in the county of Cole, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for hat boxes, for holding hats within the box and pre` venting` lateral movement thereof.
The improved device is designed more particularly for boxes containing ladies7 hats, but which may also be adapted for other forms of hats.
The improved device may be readily applied to boxes of various sizes and is designed to be manufactured in flat form for shipment or storage vand adapted to be bent into the required shape and attached within the box when ready for use.
The principal object of the device is to improve the construction and increase the etticiency and utility of devices of this character, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a strip of material, preferably of relatively heavy card board, in segmental form with lugs projecting from the outer edge 'at the ends and a lug projecting from the outer edge midway between the end lugs, and the improved device will be supplied to the trade in this shape when sold as a separate article.
In the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a view of the article before being bent into form for attachment within the box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved device when bent in shape for insertion into a box. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a box of conventional form with the improved device arranged therein.
The improved device comprises a strip of material, preferably relatively heavy paste board in segmental form as shown at 4L in Fig. l with lugs 5-5 projecting through the longer edge at the ends and with a similar lug 6 projecting from the longer edge midlikewise with the end lugs way of the lugs 5-5. To apply the improved device the segmental strip 4 is bent into a circle with the ends overlapping and 5 overlapping and bent at right angles to the body of the strip.
By forming the strip in segmental shape with the ends radially of the strip, when the strip is bent into circular shape it assumes a frusto conical form, and the overlapped ends are secured at the smaller upper edge of the strip by a suitable fastening device, as for inst-ance a McGill paper fastener 7, and with the overlapping end lugs 5, likewise secured together in the same manner as at 9. The device thus bent into shape is then inserted into the hat box represented at 8, and the fastening device 9 which is employed to secure the overlapping lugs 5 together is likewise utilized to secure the device to the bottom of the hat box, while a similar fastening device 9 is passed through the intermediate lug G at the opposite side and through the bottom of the box. By this means the structure is securely fastened to the bottom. of the hat box, and forms a frusto conical projection therein over which the hat is adapted to be placed, and thereby eftectually prevent it from lateral displacement when the box is moved about, or when being shipped.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be fastened together and likewise fastened to the box by the same fastening device which secures the overlapping lugs together. The lugs 5 extending substantially at right angles to the body of the member when in operative position, materially strengthening the structure and thereby increases its efficiency and utility.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be readily adapted to boxes of various sizes and forms, and may be manufactured and sold as an article and bent into shape and attached to the box when required for use.
lVhat is claimed, is
A device of the class described comprising a strip of bendable material in segmental form and havingv lugs extending from its longer edge at the ends and a lug extending from the longer edge intermediate the ends, the lugs adapted to be bent laterally of the strip and the strip bent into frusto conical foini with `the ends overlapping and likewise with the end lugs overlapping, and fastening devices passing" through the overlapping ends and likewise through Jehe overlapping lugs, the fastening device which unites the overlapping lugs being utilized to secure the device within a receptacle.
In estimony whereof, I aiX my signature, 1n presence ol two witnesses.
GERTRUDE AUBUCHON.
