S EA L SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,714, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed February 7, 1890. Serial No. 339,624. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL H. THOMPSON and THOMAS J. CAIN, citizens of the United States, residing at the cityof Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fixed Seals, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a device for sealing letters and packages; and it consists of a spring-disk having a central opening with radial slits diverging therefrom and short cross-s1its at the outer ends of said radial slits, a second disk having a central stud, to which said spring-disk is secured in making the seal.
Our device is illustrat-edin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the spring-disk. Fig. 2 is a side view of the spring-disk as seen applied to the stud of second disk.
Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in the several views.
A is the rim of the spring-disk, which is made flat a short distance from the outer edge, the central part being slightly concave-convex.
B is the central opening, from which radial slits O O are cut and diverge, thus forming several leaves D D, and E E are short counterslits cut at the outer ends of the main slits O. The second disk has a central stud provided with a groove, over which the spring-disk closely fits, the inside edges of the leaves engaging with the stud, and, being sharp, take firm hold and prevent its removal.
For sealing envelopes or wrappers the disk having the stud is placed inside of the envelope, with the stud projecting up through a hole in the lap, and then the spring-disk is put over the stud and pressed down, and thus the seal is made.

In a sealing device, a disk having a central stud provided with a groove, a spring-disk having a central hole and radial slits with cross slits, and a slightly concavo convex surface combined and adapted to fasten envelopes and packages, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
