BOX-COVER FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Box-Cover Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to fasteners for box covers, and aims to provide a simple and eflective box cover fastener of novel and improved construction, and having unique means for engaging the cover to hold the cover of the box in place.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fragmental portion of a strip of fasteners, which are adapted to be severed, one from the other, for individual use. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the fastener as applied to a box and its cover. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44: of Fig. 3.

The present fastener, which is formed from a sheet metal blank, comprises a tongue 1, which is provided with sharpened spurs or tangs 2 projecting from its butt or basal end and from its side edges adjacent the said end.

At its other end, the tongue 1 is provided with a pointed or arrow head 3, the inner or butt portion of which is slightly wider than the tongue 1 and the butt of the head 3 is provided with a pair of slits 4: in alinement with the side edges of the tongue 1 and forming inwardly projecting teeth 5 projecting from the butt portion of the head along the side edges of the tongue.

The head 3 is also provided at its basal or butt portion, with a V-shaped slit 6, forming a tooth 7 between the teeth 5 and projecting toward the basal end of the tongue.

to a box, the spurs or tangs 2 are bent angularly with respect to the tongue 1, as seen in Fig. 2, and the teeth 5 and 7 are bent at an acute angle with respect to the tongue and its head, toward the same side to which the spurs 2 are bent. The teeth 5 and 7 project at acute angles from the tongue and away from the free end of the tongue, or the tip of the arrow head 3, whereby the teeth will bite backwardly into the cover, as seen in Fig. 3.

Fig. 2 illustrates how a strip or series of the fasteners may be united by means of integral links 8, which are severable to separate the fasteners for independent use, but enabling the fasteners to be handled conveniently in strips or numbers.

In applying the fastener to a boX, the spurs or tangs 2 are clenched through the side wall 9 of the box, so that the headed end portion of the tongue upstands from the side wall of the box, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The tangs or spurs 2 being clenched through the wall of the box, will firmly or securely hold the tongue anchored to the box. Then, when the cover 10 is applied to the box over the fastener, the headed end of the tongue is adapted to pass through a slot 11 formed in the upper portion of the cover adjacent the flange or rim thereof. The slot 11 may either be formed by the head 3 by forcing the cover over the tongue, or the slot may be previously formed in the cover for the passage of the tongue. It is also to be understood that any number of fasteners may be employed upon a box, as may be necessary for properly holding the cover in place. After the cover has been applied over the box, the upstanding headed end of the tongue is bent flatly upon the upper portion of the cover, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, which will cause the teeth 5 and 7 to bite or engage into the cover and to project toward the body or basal portion of the tongue 1, to effectively hold the cover against accidental detachment.

The teeth 5 and 7 are more or less flexible, in order to tend to straighten out or swing into the plane of the tongue, as the tongue passes through the slot 11 of the cover, and which will also prevent the accidental detachment of the cover should the teeth 5 and 7 become disengaged from the cover, inasmuch as the teeth would engage the cover adjacent the slot 11 before the Withdrawal of the head 3 would occur should the cover tend to become separated from the boX. The head 3 of the tongue may be readily pressed onto the box, by the thumb or fingers from the dotted position illustrated in Fig. 3, to the locking position illustrated in full lines in the said figure, and whereby the teeth 5 and 7 Will bite backWardly into the cover, With respect to the direction in Which the head 3 is swung onto the cover.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is A boX cover fastener comprising a tongue adapted to be secured to the side Wall of a boX and having an arrow head at one end to pass through a slot in the box cover, the

butt portion of the head being Wider than the tongue and having slits in alinement with the side edges of the tongue, the said slits forming teeth, and the teeth being bent at acute angles relative to the tongue to bite HENRY J. JOHNSON.
