Description

(No Model.)
I J. A. SHBTTY.
METALLIC FASTENBR FOR ENVBLOPBS.
No. 490,814. Patented Jan. 31, 1893.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. SHETTY, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
METALLIC FASTENER FOR ENVELOPESJ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,814, dated January 31, 1893.
Application filed October 14, 1892. Serial No. 448,824. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, JOHN A. SHETTY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New J ersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fasteners for Envelopes; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in which like letters of reference indicate.
corresponding parts in each of the several figures: Figure 1. illustrates my improved seal attached to an envelope. Fig. 2. isa top plan view thereof, the prongs or fingers being turned upward, to fully illustrate their c0nstruction; Fig. 3. is a sectional view on line 00 of Fig. 2, the prongs or fingers being shown in normal position, and Fig. 4. illustrates a modified form of my improved seal.
In said drawings 1) represents a circular metal disk, provided at its outer periphery with an upwardly extending semi-circular shaped ring 0. Integral with the outer edge of said ring isarranged a series of triangular shaped fingers or prongs d, slightly curved inward at their points, as shown at h in Figs. 2 and 3. The disk b and also the projecting ring a are covered with a thin layer of sealing wax, 9, see Fig. 3. whereby the metallic fastener receives the appearance of an ordinary seal.
In Fig. 4, a modified form is shown, in which two of the prongs (e) are made larger than the others, and they are provided at their edges with a series of teeth f.
The seal is applied to the envelope, by pushing the curved points hot the prongs or fingers d (or d and c, Fig. 4) into and through the overlapping portion of said envelope and then in pressing with the thumb or finger on the disk I), whereby the prongs will be closed toward the center, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
By having the prongs curved tearing the contents of the envelope is prevented.
The toothed projections e have the advantage, that they cannot be withdrawn, after once being pushed in, without severely injuring and tearing the envelope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The metallic fastener for envelopes and the like, consisting of the circular disk I), having the annular rim 0 around the periphery and fingers d depending therefrom, said fingers being bent inwardly as at h,one or more of said fingers being serrated on the edges, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of October, 1892.
JOHN A. SI-IETTY.
