Be it known that I, JACOB F. GATES, 'acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in 'Garment- Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fasteners, and has for its object to provide a fasteners that may be employed for shoes, gloves, and like articles, or for various garments employing a fastening device of the hook-and-eye form; and to v this end the invention consists in the novel m ss construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention has for its further object to provide a fastener of this type which will present an exceedingly handsome appearance when in position upon the garment, it being possible to cover the entire mechanism by an ornamental head, and has for its further object to provide a fastening which may be easily clasped and unclasped when desired; furthermore, that when in the fastened position the neck will'present a fiat surface and the engaging portions of the clamp preventing any liability of the fastening becoming loose at an inopportune moment.

A still further object Vof the invention is to construct a fastening device that will be extremely simple in its construction, universal in its application, and comparatively cheap to manufacture, which may be easily and quickly operated, and effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification ,and wherein likeletters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l is a-perspective view of the shoe, showing my improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clasp. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the shoe or garment and plate holder, showing button andy the fastening-plate with button removed.

. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view of the button, taken on the line y of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the drawings by refer ence-letters, a indicates the fastening-plate, which is provided with barbs or prongs Z9, adapted to be inserted through the material and clamp therein, said plate being provided with an aperture c, which receives the circular portion d, formed at the base of the triangular neck c, and an ornamental disk or button f being formed on the upper end of said neck, which is preferably milled or corrugated on its top surface, so as to give the same a handsome appearance, as well as to permit the easy turning of the neck, which is held in position in the plate a by means of a ange g, formed at the base of the neck to prevent the same from pulling through the aperture c. The plate a isv formed with a portion a', bent underneath the neck and adapted to be flush with the inner face of the material h, in which the` prongs are secured, thus presenting a smoothsurface on its inner face.

The clasp is formed of' a single piece of wire or other suitable material, having its ends formed into eyelets Zo Za for fastening to the material, or these ends may be formed in barbs or pointed projections 7c', as shown in Fig. 6,- as may be desired, the material being bent to form a frame Z, which surrounds a heart-shaped frame Z, having shoulders Z2, against which the triangular-shaped neck e abuts after the same has been inserted within the heart-shaped frame Z.

The mannerin which the device is secured to the garment will be readily apparent from the drawings, and to engage the neck within the clasp the triangular portion is inserted between the shoulders Z2, causing the frame to expand sufliciently to admit the said triangular neck, when the frame will retract, closing the shoulders over the flat face of the triangular neck thus presented and holding the fastener in the locked position, and in order to disengage the same-the neck may be turned within the frame Z by means of the button f until one edge of the triangular neck IOO is presented to the openin g between the shoulders, when a pull on the clasp and upon the button in the reversed direction from each other will readily disengage the two members.

It will be observed that when the device is in the clasped position the ornamental head f will entirely hide the locking means, thus presenting an exceedingly handsome appearance upon the shoe or other garment to which the device may be attached, and although I have shown the fastener as applied to a shoe in this illustration yet I by no means wish to limit myself to this particular use, as it will of course be noted that the same will be as applicable for gloves or any garment wherein a fastener of the hook-and-eye type may be employed. It will also be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what said neck provided with a suitable head inl combination with a frame adapted to expand to receive the neck, substantially as shown and described.
