CLIFFORD R. BRADLEY, GEORGE B. PILKINGTON, AND IRVING G. PLATT, OF v WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT; LEWIS A. PLATT ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID .IRVING G. PLATT, DECEASED;. SAID BRADLEY AND SAID PILKINGTON ASSIGNORS TO SAID PLATTQ CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 588,674, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed October 14, 1896. Serial No. 608,872. (No model.)
To wZZ- whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CLIFFORD R. BRADLEY, GEORGE B. PILKINGTON, and IRVING G. PLATT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and .State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in clasps or fasteners, the object being to improve upon those of somewhat similar construction in several important particulars and to provide an article of this kind which shall be simple and cheap to manufacture and adapted I 5 for use as a key-chain fastener, cuff or necktie holder, and for other purposes.
With these and other ends in view our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as willbe hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of our improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof, the looking or attaching lever being raised or opened. Fig. 4 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Figs. 6, 7, and S are perspective views of the several parts detached. Fig. 9
is a bottom plan view of the detached lockinglever.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body or frame of the fastener, preferably 3 5 formed of the shape and outline as shown and I doubled upon itself, forming the two sides or plates a b.
In the side a is formed an opening a for the reception of a looking or an attaching lever B, the metal of the body being slightly struck up to form bearings c c for the reception of the lugs cl (1, formed on the lever B, said lever having an outline corresponding to the outline of the opening a, formed in the body of the fastener, and having its extreme end 6 slightly bent or curved upwardly to facilitate the opening or raising of the same.
It will be seen by reference to Figs. 3 and 6 that the lever is bent at right angles, forming the handle an arm g and opening h being formed at the angle or bed to receive a lug or projection 2', formed on the body A between the bearings 0, this construction and arrangements of the parts preventing the lever from becoming accidentally detached after the said parts have been finally assembled, especially when the lever is in its raised position, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.
WVithin the body A is contained the spring C, doubled or bent upon itself, as shown. in
Fig. 7, one end 70 thereof being bent or turned downwardly and the opposite end roughened or provided with teeth Z for tightly adhering to the material to which it is attached.
In order to hold the spring in place within the body,we form in one plate thereof an opening to for the reception of the projection n, formed by striking up the metal of the plate b of the body A, and 011 the other plate of the spring we form the rib 0, which when the lever is raised fits in the groove 19, formed in the arm g of the latter, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, and in the recess or notch 1", formed in theextreme end of the arm g when the lever is lowered, this construction and arrangement of parts effectively holding the spring against displacement at all times.
In practice the material to which the fastener is to be secured is inserted between the two plates of the spring C, the lever B having been first raised or opened, as shown in Fig. 3, after which said lever is lowered, and which by reason of the arm 9 resting or bearing on one plate of the spring forces the latter downwardly, and thereby effectively clamping or holding the fabric between the two plates of the spring.
It will be understood, of course, without further description or illustration that a hole or holes may be formed in the body of the fastener for the attachment of a key-chain, or, if desired, a loop or other means may be secured thereto or formed thereon for attaching or securing it to a watch-chain.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a clasp or fastener, the combination with the body A, of the spring 0, fitting within said body and provided with a rib, and a lever fitting in said body and provided with the recess 0 for receiving the rib on said spring,- when the lever is raised, substantially as described.
2. In a clasp or fastener, the combination with the body A, of the spring 0 fitting within said body and provided with a rib, and a le ver fitting in said body and provided with the recess '1" and notch 19 for receiving the rib on said spring, when the lever is raised and lowcred respectively, substantially as described.
3. In a clasp or fastener, the combination with. the body A, provided with bearings c and a lug or projection 2', located between the latter, of a lever provided with projections (1, adapted to fit in said bearings and with an opening h for receiving said lug z', substantially as described.
4. In a clasp or fastener, the combination with the body A, provided with the opening a, and projection n, of the spring 0, provided with an opening m for receiving said projection, and with the rib 0, and the lever B attached to said body and provided with a recess or groove for receiving said rib when the lever is raised and with a notch on 'one end thereof, for receiving said rib, when the lever is lowered, substantially as described.
Signed at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, this 3d day of October, A. D. 1896.
