Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. Russ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Matrix-Bands for Dental Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. matrix band for the use of dentists and the object is to provide a device comprising a thin metallic strip, suitably formed, which may readily be passed around the tooth to be operated upon and secured in position by passing the free end of the band through a slot formed in the opposite end, said free end being then bent backwardly and secured by means of devices provided for the purpose.
A further object is to provide in a device of the character indicated certain novel securing means formed integrally with the end of the strip, at points adjacent to the slotand adapted to be bent over the free end of the band after the latter has been turned llgacgwardly for the purpose of forming a It still further object is to provide a plurality of offset portions on the band so positioned that the one nearest the free end may he used for covering a cavity under the gum when a large tooth or molar is being operated upon, and when a smaller tooth or bicuspid is being operated upon this particular offset portion may be trimmed off, and the other offset portion used for the purpose indicated.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and formation of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the band in operative position as applied to the tooth.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band detached and before the free end thereof has been passed through the slot of the opposite end.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form in operative position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which this modified form is produced.
In Fig. 1 the tooth being operated upon is designated 10 and the matrix band as a. whole is designated 12. This band is passed around the tooth and the free end let is passed through the slot 15 in the opposite end, said free end then being turned backwardly to form the necessary bight, after which the laterally extending ears 16 and 17 are pressed downwardly over the edges of the band proper in order to retain the band in position.
In order to remove the band it is only necessary to turn ears 16 and 17 outwardly, and after bending the free end of the band in the reverse direction to that previously indicated, this free end is passed through the slot. In applying the band, it is of course understood that it Will be worked tightly around the tooth before the free end is bent backwardly for the purpose of securing the band in position. It will be observed that the slot 15 is formed in such position that the ends thereof are located centrally with reference to the ears l6 and 17. In view of this construction these ears when bent into engaging position will extend transversely of the slot and contact with oppositely located portions of the band.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the band is designated 20 and is provided with a free end 21 as in the preferred form, with a slot 22 extending transversely of the opposite end, and with laterally extending ears 23 and 24. A plurality of laterally extending portions are designated 25 and 26, these portions projected from opposite sides of the band, or rather from opposite edges thereof. These portions are designed to cover cavities extending under the margin of gum, and when a molar is being operated upon the portion 25 is made use of, but when a bicuspid is to be inclosed by the matrix band, the portion 25 is trimmed oil, the band of course, being formed of thin metal, and the portion 26 is caused to extend up under the gum, for the purpose indicated.
What is claimed is:
1. A matrix band comprising a strip of material having a slot extending transversely thereof near one end, and ears extending laterally from the edge of the band at points adjacent the slot.
2. A matrix band comprising a strip of material having a slot extending transversely thereof near one end, said band ineluding ears extending laterally from the edges thereof at points adjacent the slot and portions offset laterally from opposite edges of the band at different distances from the ends thereof.
