UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JIISTUS A. TRAUI, OF NEXV BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I'IA'LF TO HENRY O. HIND, QF SAME PLACE.
BOX-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,283, dated October l6 1888.
Application filed August 13, 1888. Serial No. 282,541. ("No model.)
To (tZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JUSTUS A. Traitor, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Handles,ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in handles for packing boxes of paper or other boxes of thin material;and the object of my invention is to make a cheap and convenient handle which can readily be attached to ordinary boxes, and which also may be detached for application to another box when desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a packingbox and its cover with one of my box-handles applied to the box. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle alone. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of a box and cover with my handle applied to the box. Fig. at is a like view of the same with my handle applied to the box-cover, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of my box-handle.
I prefer to construct my handle of wire bent into the form shown. It consists ofa handle, b',adapted to project horizontally, from which handle I extend obliquely upward and outward two diverging arms, 7 7, and from the outer ends of these arms I bend downwardly the returnarms S 8, all as shown. For convenience of attachment I prefer to bend the outer end of the arms 8 8 slightly in a direction away from the handle, as shown at 8' 8.
In Fig. 1 the box A has a cover, B, which extends downwardly upon the box only a short distance. XVhen the cover is removed, I slip the handle upon the upper edge oft-he box with the two arms 8 8 upon the inside, and the arms 77 and handle 6 upon the outside, and force them downwardly until the upper edge of the box comes in contact with the inside of the bend at thejunction of the arms 7 and 8. The portions of the arms which are hidden from view and the upper edge of the box are indicated by broken lines. The lower ends of the arms 7 and 8 are also formed nearly enough in one plane, so that when the handle is applied in the manner described the spring of the material acts to press or clamp the arms against the opposite sides of the paper or other ma terial of which the box end is formed, thereby securing the handle in position against acci dental displacement.
In stores and many other places where boxes are placed one upon another in piles side by side it is very inconvenient to withdraw any particular box, and my handle is specially adapted to be applied to such boxes, so that the box may be readily withdrawn from its place, and even the entire box and its contents may be carried from place to place by taking hold of the box-handle and placing a finger under the bottom of the box at the handle end.
In Figs. 3 and 4. I have shown a box whose cover is substantially the height of the box, the same being what is sometimes termed a double box. For such a box I make the arms 7 7 somewhat longer, so that the handle may come at or near the top or bottom of the box. With such a box my handle may be applied either to the box or cover, as shown, respectively, in Figs. 3 and 4.
These handles may be made in differentsizes and of heavy or light material to adapt them for use upon different styles of boxes or for boxes having light or heavy contents. Then the box is worn out or its contents are ex hausted, the handle can be readily detached and applied to another box for further use.
I am aware that a prior patent shows a removable handle for tea-cups and similarround vessels formed of wire doubled upon itself and extending npwardly'to the top edge of the cup with the two members lying closely together and then downwardly on the inside thereof, and the same is hereby disclaimed.
I claim as my invention The herein-described box-handle, consisting of the horizontally-projecting handle 6, the arms 7 7, extending upwardly and diverging outwardly therefrom, and the return-arms 8 S at the outer ends of the arms7 7, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
JUSTUS A. TRAUT.
