Description

A. P. LADD.
CIGAR BOX LID HOLDER.
AIPPLIOATION FILED FEB. 11, 1908.
917,462, 1 Patented Apr. 6,1909.
ARCHER P. LADD, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
CIGAR-BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Application filed February 11, 1908. Serial No. 415,439.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anonnn P. LADD, of Minneapolis, l-lennepin county, llfiinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Cigar-Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a lid-holder for cigar boxes, which will support the cover in an upright or inclined position and with sufficient rigidity to allow the box to be lifted by the cover.
a further object is to provide a support capable of application to any style or type of cigar box and adapted to support a price tag as well as the cover of the box.
A further object is to provide a lid holder of very simple, economical construction and one that is easily attached to the box and very durable.
The invention consists generally in vari ous constructions and combinations, all as herinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a cigar box with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view of the box and a side view of the device of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the device removed from the box. l1 l is a view showing a modified construction. Fig. 5 is a top view of the device shown in Fig. d.
In the drawing, 2 represents a cigar box having a cover 3. The holder or support which I prefer to employ consists of a plate 4% curved slightly, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and provided at its upper end with fixed jaws 5 and 6 located respectively on the upper and lower edges oi the plate, said jaws being in staggered relation with one another and their contiguous edges provided with a series of teeth 7. To apply the device to the cover I tilt the plate 4 upwardly until the end of the cover slips in between the aws 5 and The plate is then swung down toward the box, and the jaw teeth will be forced into the wood of the cover, locking the device securely thereon and also clamping a price tag which is inserted between one of the jaws and the box cover, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Instead of having the jaws upon opposite edges of the plate 4 I may arrange them on the same edge, as indicated in Fig. 4. When this construction is employed I prefer to turn the teeth of one of the jaws up and those of the other jaw down, as shown in Fig. 4.. Their function, however, will be substantially the same as in the other figure. The lower end of the plate 4 has an outwardly turned jaw 8 thereon provided with teeth 9 that are adapted to dig into the end of the box. 10 is a movable jaw pivoted at 11 on the plate l and having a cam edge 12 that is arranged to contact with the inner surface of the end wall of the box and draw the jaw 8 and its teeth snugly against the outer surface of the same end, thus causing the plate t to be securely locked to the box. A finger grip 13 is preferably formed on the aw 10 adapted to engage the plate t and limit the movement of the jaw. This finger grip is easily grasped for the purpose of oscillating the jaw 10 and releasing the device from the box.
The device may be stamped out of sheet metal of any suitable gage and its surface nickeled or otherwise finished.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cigar box lid holder, comprising a sheet metal plate having aws formed integrally thereon, near one end, said jaws having edges adapted to grip the box lid and a space between them to receive the end of a box cover and permitting the insertion of the box cover only when the support is tilted upwardly and the teeth of said aws engaging said cover when said plate is swung downwardly toward the end wall of the box and means for securing the lower end of said plate to said end wall, substantially as described.
2. A cigar box lid holder, comprising a sheet metal plate having integral jaws on its upper and. lower edges projecting therefrom substantially at right angles, and in staggered relation with one another said jaws being in planes at right angles substantially to the plane of the box lid when the device is in use, there being a sufficient space provided between said jaws to allow the insertion of the end of a box cover when said plate is swung upwardly to a predetermined position and said aws engaging the opposite surfaces of said cover when said plate is swung downwardly and means for securing the lower end of said late to the end wall of the box, substantial y as described.
' 3. A cigar box lid holder, comprising a plate having means for attachment to a box cover and an outwardly turned jaw formed on its lower end and adapted to bear on the upper edge of the end wall of the box and having a part to extend down on the outside oi said surface of said end Wall, substantially as deend Wall and dig into its surface and a movable scribed.
