UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
GALLEY-LOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 190s.
Application led .Tune 15, 1907. Serial No. 379,176.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED S. ORCHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Galley-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful galley lock and consists in providing means for gripping or grasping, only one side wall of the galley, on the opposite sides thereof, whereby while the lock is firmly and positively held in position no strain is placed upon the galley.
It further consists of means for protecting the inner side wall of the galley so that the same will not be injured in any manner.
`It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a galley showing the lock in position thereon. Fig. 2 re resents a artial sectional view and partial p an view t iereof. Fig. 3 represents Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, I have found vin ractice that it is essential to provide a galey lock which will positively hold the type therein and in order to accomplish this it is necessary that the lock be held firmly and positively in position. In addition, no strain must be placed upon the sides of the galley as this may injure the same and further the inner walls of the sides of the galley must be straight and true and with no grooves or identations of any kind whatsoever. My lock is designed to overcome these difficulties and in the drawings I have shown a construction for carrying out my invention but it will be evident that various changes may be made therein and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention and I do not therefore desire to be limited to the construction as herein shown and described.
1 designates a galley having sides 2 and 3 and the end piece 4. In the outer walls of the sides 2 and 3 I form the grooves l5 and 6, the wall of each of which is inclined as at 7 and said grooves forming the flanges 8 and 9 upon each side, it being noted that the inner walls of the sides 2 and 3 are straight and are without grooves, this being necessary for the proper positioning ofv the type. The lock consists of the body 10 which is of suitable length to extend between the` inner faces of the two side walls 2 and 3. Integral with or connected to the body 10 is the plate 11 which is provided with the downwardly eX- tended portion 12 having a lug 13 extending inwardly therefrom, said lug being provided with the inclined face 14 adapted to fit the inclined face 7v of the groove 5 or 6, it being noted that the upper edge of the side wall on which the lock moves supports the plate 11, as will best be understood from Fig. 3.
15 designates a cam having a handle or lever 16 and said cam being mounted on a pivot 17 carried by the plate 11.
18 designates a plate preferably of spring material which is rigidly secured to the body 10 and extends therefrom in such a position as to be seated between the cam 15 and the inner wall of the side wall 2 or 3 upon which the lug is mounted.
The operation of the parts will be readily understood. The lock is placed upon one of the side walls, in the present instance, the side wallf-3, the lug 13 sliding in the groove 6 and with the inclined faces 7 and 14 in proper relation, the iiange 8 being situated between the plate 11 and the lug 13. After the type has been inserted in the g'alley the lock is moved to a suitable position on the side wall and by manipulation of the handle 16 in the proper direction, the cam 15 bears upon the spring plate 18 forcing the same tightly against the inner wall of the side Wall 3 and moving the cam faces 7 and 14 into intimate relation, whereby it will be seen that the side wall is gripped between the cam 15 and the lug 13 so that the locl: will be positively and firmly held in position without any strain whatsoever upon the side walls of the galley. In addition, the spring plate 18 being situated between the inner wall of the side 3 and the cam, the latter is prevented from coming in contact therewith, thus preventing denting or otherwise injuring the said inner wall, the advantages of which are evident. In order to remove the lock or to move the same upon Having thus described rny invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a galley having side Walls, a groove on the outer side of one of said side Walls and a lock having an overhanging portion adapted to\be seated in said groove and having an inclined face, a cain carried by said lock and a spring arm adapted to be seated on the opposite side of said side Wall from that of the projection and against Which arm said cain c outer side of one of said side Walls having an inclined Wall, a flange above said groove and a lock having an overhanging projection, a lug seated in said groove and having an inclined face contacting With the inclined Wall of said groove, a cani pivotally carried by said lock and a spring plate adapted to be seated upon the opposite side of the side Wall from that of the groove and against which the cam is adapted to bear.
